Miami 30 at Kansas City 48

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Miami Dolphins:

RB Ricky Williams struggled a little early but as the game progressed he started to overpower the defense. After a fumble and with the Chiefs pulling away, Williams became limited and didn't see the ball as much. He just carried the ball 14 times. Although he did score. In the passing game, Williams was quite effective catching passes catching 7 for 60 yards. He was pulled down at the 1 yard line which set up the Fiedler rushing TD.

QB Jay Fielder was not particularly impressive and the majority of his 310 yards came playing from behind. He's vulnerable to interceptions on deep balls where he is not accurate. He threw one 1 TD and 4 interceptions. He did play with one finger on his throwing hand taped and that may have affected his performance.

WR Chris Chambers is an excellent receiver but he can only go as far as Jay Fiedler takes him and unless Fiedler improves his deep ball accuracy, this will hold Chambers back.

The Miami run defense is extremely stout, holding Priest Holmes to only 52 yards on the ground. The pass defense was suspect with Patrick Surtain inactive for the game.

Kansas City Chiefs:

QB Trent Green was on fire today, throwing for 328 yards and 5 TDs. He didn't throw an interception and he uncharacteristically added 48 yards on 3 scrambles.

Tony Gonzalez showed why he is the best tight end in the league this afternoon when he racked up 140 yards and 3 TDs.

RB Priest Holmes ran hard and looked much better than his stats would indicate; and 115 total yards and a TD isn't bad for a 'slow day'.

There is no clear cut number one wide receiver on this team; Morton and Kennison were both mediocre and are realistically the 3rd and 4th receivers behind Gonzalez and Holmes.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Miami Dolphins

QB: Fiedler - Was accurate on short to intermediate routes but often threw errant passes on deep patterns leading to 4 interceptions on the day. He played with one of his fingers on his throwing hand taped. There were a couple of opportunities for long completions to Chris Chambers that Fiedler missed with inaccurate passes. In his defense, he was playing from behind for the whole game and so the Chiefs could put a lot of men back in coverage. Came close to having another TD that Chris Chambers caught out of bounds in the endzone.

RB: Ricky Williams - Was held to minimal gains throughout the game rushing 14 times for 66 yards. Williams was a much bigger passing target throughout the game than he had been recently. Williams caught a pass over the middle where he reached the 1 yard line to allow Fiedler to get a rushing TD. He slowly started to overpower the defense and was getting more and more yards including a 30-yard gain and a strong 3-yard TD. After a fumble and with the game slipping away, Williams stopped getting rush attempts and Robert Edwards was placed into the game more often.

Rob Konrad - was a non factor running the ball, but was used in the passing game. He caught 4 balls for 28 yards and a td.

WR: Chris Chambers - has some of the best hands in the business. He also boasts great speed. With 6 catches for 102 yards, his stats were good. However, they could have been a lot better had Fiedler done a better job getting him the ball deep. He was open deep several times and Fiedler missed him. Came very close to a TD with a great catch that was ruled out of bounds in the endzone.

Oronde Gadsden - was his usual self. He has sure hands and little speed. He caught 4 balls for 69 yards.

TE: Randy McMichael - was quiet today with only 2 catches for 18 yards. He was a target once in the redzone but couldn't make the one handed grab on a less than spectacular pass by Fielder.

Pass Defense: Allowed Trent Green to pass all over them - mostly to Tony Gonzalez. Patrick Surtain was inactive for the game. Backup Jamar Fletcher allowed a 46 yard completion to Eddie Kennison where Fletcher was beat deep. Otherwise, he wasn't awful.

Rush Defense: This defense is extremely good against the run. They have big tackles in the middle and speed from the linebacker position. They often penetrated, allowing Priest Holmes only 52 yards on the ground where a lesser back wouldn't have even reached that total.

Special Teams: Albert Johnson is an excellent return man, averaging 29.3 yards on 7 returns. He is lightning fast and could break one at any time. His longest was 49 yards. Miami enjoyed good field position all day long because of his return abilities. Mare was a perfect 3/3 on the day and each attempt went right down the middle. He hit from 42, 29, and 25 yards out.

Kansas City Chiefs

QB: Trent Green - Could do little wrong on the day. He consistently made the right read in the passing game, and on 3 occasions uncharacteristically ran for big chunks of yardage (he actually had the longest scramble of his career - 24 yards). His passes were crisp and accurate and he had great touch on the ball. He finished with 328 yards with 5 TDs and no interceptions. On the downside, he showed some arm strength issues as his longer passes didn't have the zip you'd want to see. This might be another reason you'll see the Chiefs focus so heavily on Gonzalez and Holmes.

RB: Priest Holmes - Ran with power, great acceleration and 20/20 vision. On his finest run of the game (a 25 yard td), he rivaled Marshall Faulk in the skills he displayed. The stout Miami defense didn't allow him great totals on the day but for an off day, 115 total yards and a td isn't bad.

Tony Richardson - Was not a factor on the day; Holmes is the feature back on this team without question. Holmes was limited simply because Miami is that good on defense and because Green was having great success throwing the ball. It had nothing to do with Richardson.

WR: Eddie Kennison - Was average on the day but had a nice fingertip grab where he beat Jamar Fletcher deep for 46 yards. He finished the day with 2 catches for 57 yards.

Johnnie Morton - Finished the day with 4 catches for 39 yards and a TD.

Few teams could have their top 2 WRs total 96 yards while their QB throws for 328 yards. But the Chiefs can. With Tony Gonzalez and Priest Holmes catching the ball, Kennison and Morton are realistically the 3rd and 4th receivers on the team.

TE: Tony Gonzalez showed today why he is the best tight end in the NFL. He was usually Trent Green's primary receiver. He caught the ball well in traffic, showed nice speed and broke a number of tackles. He caught 7 balls for 140 yards and 3 TDs. Played again with a soft cast wrapping on his wrist but obviously, it didn't affect him.

Pass Defense: Greg Wesley was a standout on the day with 3 interceptions.

Rush Defense: Good penetration by Eric Hicks caused Ricky Williams to fumble. The Chiefs put a lot of people in the box early to stop Ricky Williams, but still couldn't tackle him on a number of occasions.

Special Teams: Morten Anderson does not play like a 42 year old man. He was 2/2 and hit from 50 yards out. He almost kicks the kickoffs out of the endzone.
