New York Jets 3 at Jacksonville Jaguars 28

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

New York Jets:

The Jets are in the midst of a total team breakdown. There was not a single aspect of their team that performed even average today.

New York suffered a number of key injuries. QB Vinny Testaverde came out of the game early in the game with what was reported as a bruised shoulder. X-Rays were negative and he was originally supposed to return, but Chad Pennington remained in the game. WR Wayne Chrebet injured his knee and laid on the ground for a long time in a lot of pain. He returned to the game briefly before coming out and having his right knee heavily wrapped. DE John Abraham also was injured, but left the field under his own power.

Backup QB Chad Pennington filled in for Testaverde and played very well. He threw one interception that was a communication error by WR Kevin Swayne. Pennington finished up 21 of 34 for 281 yards and will start next week. After Chrebet left the game, Pennington seemed to develop a very good rapport with Laveranues Coles.

Curtis Martin was effective running the ball when he got carries (8 carries for 44 yards), but LaMont Jordan had more carries (12) and was the RB of choice on the goal line. Martin also did not have a reception and was only targeted once, so it appears the Jets were trying to take it easy with him.

Jacksonville Jaguars:

Fred Taylor had an amazing day. He broke off a number of long runs in which he had to shake a few would-be tacklers. On one run in particular, he turned a modest 3 yard gain into a 25 yard scamper by balancing himself on a lineman, regaining his footing, and making a number of Jets defenders miss. He also had a 72-yard reception on the Jaguars first play that would have been a TD, but he was tackled at the 1. Very alarming situation though as Stacey Mack vultured 3 short yardage TDs.

Stacey Mack was the short yardage and goal line back all game. He had 3 touchdowns, 2 of which were 1 yard runs. This was the role we'd expected Mack to play taking TDs away from Taylor. A definite worry for Taylor owners and a nice bonus for guys who own Mack if he'll keep it up.

Mark Brunell's streak of 14 consecutive games with a touchdown pass ended, but he did a fine job of managing the offense and not making any mistakes. He would have had somewhat better stats if not for 2 dropped balls by Jimmy Smith, but he failed to see Smith wide open in the end zone on one play that would have been an easy 20+ yard TD.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

New York Jets

QB: Vinny Testaverde looked terrible and had no time at all to pass in going 0-4 before being knocked out of the game with a shoulder injury. X-Rays were negative and he was originally supposed to return, but Chad Pennington remained in the game.

Chad Pennington looked very good while in. He tried to rally the Jets emotionally, and he made a number of crisp passes that were very well timed. In a Monday conversation with Head Coach Herman Edwards, Pennington was named the starter for week 5.

RB: Curtis Martin did not get much of a chance once again. He was effective while in, but the game got out of reach early on. When the score was really out of control, Martin took an early exit and did not return. LaMont Jordan had one gain for 11 yards, but just 23 yards on his other 11 carries. With the game well in hand, Jordan got a goal-line carry but lost a fumble to Eric Westmoreland. He had also fumbled on an earlier carry which was recovered by the Jets Kevin Mawae. Coach Edwards went back to Jordan on the very next play, but after a second fumble, one has to wonder how long Edwards will tolerate carelessness with the ball.

WR: Wayne Chrebet injured his right knee and was in obvious pain. He returned later in the game, but was ineffective and noticeably limping.

Laveranues Coles was the main target once both Testaverde and Chrebet left the game. It may have been because the Jets were behind, but Edwards opened up the passing game slightly once Pennington was in. This greatly benefited Coles, who was targeted on over 10 passes including 3 third downs and 1 in the red zone. He finished the game with a season high 8 receptions for 97 yards.

Santana Moss injured his hamstring earlier in the week and did not travel with the team.

Kevin Swayne was the third WR. On his first reception of the day, he fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Jacksonville.

TE: Anthony Becht caught just 2 passes for 25 yards. Becht is more of a red zone target and since the Jets only managed 1 red zone trip all day, he wasn't heard from much.

Pass Defense: Did not muster much of a rush on Mark Brunell. While they did manage 2 sacks, there wasn't enough consistent pressure on him. When they did manage to flush him from the pocket, Brunell was usually able to make enough happen with his feet for a receiver to get open. Jimmy Smith was almost shut out, as he managed only 1 catch for 10 yards. Did not make a very good opening statement in a big game, as Fred Taylor caught a 72 yard bomb from Brunell on the Jaguars first offensive play.

Rush Defense: Once again, the Jets run defense was atrocious. Fred Taylor ran at will, and finished with video game totals of 21 carries for 142 yards. The Jets did do a better job of tackling after Taylor's great 25 yard run in which he was almost down but got up to gain another 22 yards. But by that point, it really didn't matter. The Jets were also poor on short yardage and goal line situations, as evidenced by Stacey Mack's 3 rushing touchdowns.

Special Teams: Had one of the ugliest plays of the year on a busted punt fake. Punter Tom Tupa mishandled the snap and decided to throw a 2-handed pass directly into the waiting arms of Donovan Darius. This turnover resulted in Mack's 2nd TD run of the day. John Hall was solid again in hitting his weekly field goal, this one from 46 yards. Chad Morton filled in for Santana Moss on punt returns, and did a good job on those and his kick returns.

Jacksonville Jaguars

QB: Mark Brunell was very efficient in throwing 10 of 15 for 173 yards. His streak of 14 straight games with at least one TD was stopped, but it wasn't because Jacksonville couldn't passit was because they had so much success running the ball that there wasn't much need to put it in the air. He had loads of time to throw, and when he didn't have quite as much time he still managed to buy enough time with his feet for people to get open. He never locked on to one target, and his first 7 completions went to 7 different receivers.

RB: Fred Taylor ran wild over the Jets, as did Stacey Mack. Mack offered a good change of pace from Taylor, as he bruised through the Jets while Taylor was able to quickly maneuver around tacklers. Both had tremendous success today, and combined for 212 yards on 36 carries to go along with 4 touchdowns. Mack was clearly the short yardage and goal line option, but Taylor's home run potential almost got him an early td on a 72 yard reception in which he was taken down at the 1. He wasn't caught from behind, he just was waiting for blockers which held him up from scoring. Surprisingly, Taylor was still in the game at 28-3 with under 4 minutes left to play.

WR: Jimmy Smith had an unusually silent day with just 1 catch for 10 yards. He dropped 2 passes in a span of 3 plays which cost him approximately 35 more yards.

Patrick Johnson started opposite Smith but did not register a reception.

TE: Kyle Brady had one early reception and was injured on the play. He did return to the game.

Pass Defense: Got 2 gift interceptions that were thrown directly to them (one of them was the busted fake punt play). Laveranues Coles was able to get open a lot later in the game, which may have been the result of softer coverage since the Jaguars were up by 25 points. Got tons of pressure on Vinny Testaverde, and eventually knocked him out of the game. Chad Pennington also had to deal with a good amount of pressure, but he was able to avoid it slightly better than Testaverde did.

Rush Defense: Once again, the Jets were not able to test the oppositions run defense. The score and pace of the game dictated that the Jets were never able to really get into a flow running the ball. When Curtis Martin ran, he was effective. But LaMont Jordan was stifled more often than not, and also coughed up 2 fumbles to Jacksonville defenders.

Special Teams: Hayden Epstein missed his only field goal attempt, from 45 yards out. The Jaguars only returned 1 kickoff and 2 punts in the game, none of which went for more than 5 yards.
