Kansas City 29 at New York Jets 25

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Kansas City Chiefs:

PK Morten Andersen pulled his right hamstring during warm-ups, and it showed from his first kick. Despite the injury, he stayed in the game for field goals and finished 3 for 3 on the game.

The Chiefs are really hurting on defense. Early in the game, they pressured Pennington, but the Jets were able to run with success, which hurt their pass rush.

RB Priest Holmes saw the ball early and often in this game, staying involved both running and catching the ball. He continued to show the same burst he has all season and shows great field presence and patience on his runs. He remains the key to the Chiefs' offense.

Trent Green had a workmanlike day, but rallied the Chiefs when it counted leading a touchdown drive at the end of the fourth quarter. Green was efficient throughout this game, and made a number of nice throws.

Johnnie Morton, Eddie Kennison, and Dante Hall were all involved in the passing game. Morton had a couple of effective reverses on the day. Hall looked good during the game and showed good field vision on his touchdown catch. He stayed on the field throughout the game, and looks like he may steal some looks from the other wide receivers.

New York Jets:

New QB Chad Pennington made a couple of "rookie" throws in the game, but overall looked very good. He played with a lot of energy, didn't make many mistakes, and most importantly found a way to get the Jets in the end zone.

RB Curtis Martin looked to be his old self during this game. For the first time this season, Martin didn't show any signs of his ankle injury and made his cuts with confidence.

WR Laveranues Coles also looked good during the game, and the announcers even noted that QB Pennington has admitted Coles is his favorite target. Coles made a couple of terrific catches over the middle, and Pennington looked his way on a number of deep routes that were incomplete.

TE Anthony Becht caught his touchdown at the very end of the second quarter deep in the red zone. He was also targeted in the back of the end zone later in the game. Though he finished the game with only one catch, he continues to be a primary red zone target for the Jets.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Kansas City Chiefs

QB: Trent Green completed his first two passes for big gains to Kennison and Morton. His third pass was an interception in the end zone as he threw into coverage and was really his only mistake of the game. Green was workmanlike on the day, but the Chiefs focus on offense was to get the ball to Priest Holmes. Green made a nice block downfield on Morton's big reverse. He also threw a strike downfield to Dante Hall on his long touchdown catch. It was a great throw.

WR: Johnnie Morton had an excellent 36-yard reverse and showed good speed on the play early in the second half. Later on the drive, Green targeted Morton in the end zone but the Jets broke up the play. Though the play looked like defensive pass interference, it was not called and the Chiefs settled for a field goal. Morton ran another reverse later in the game for another 15 yards.

Eddie Kennison dropped an easy catch late in the first quarter that should have been a nice gain. In the second quarter, he made a great play on the sidelines to keep his feet in bounds to make up for his drop.

Dante Hall took an early pass on a wide receiver screen for a short gain, but showed some quickness on the play. He had another short reception called back on a holding play in the second quarter. Hall was the target on a missed two-point conversion. His touchdown catch in the fourth quarter showed good field vision on the run after the catch. He stayed on the field throughout the game, and looks like he will steal some looks from the other wide receivers.

RB: Priest Holmes saw the ball early and often in this game, staying involved both running and catching the ball. He continued to show the same burst he has all season. He was helped by a Chief's offensive line that got a great push throughout the game. Holmes shows excellent field presence and patience on his runs, particularly on his second quarter touchdown run. Holmes had 27 yards on a draw play to end the first half when the Chiefs were lined up for a Hail Mary play. He finished the first half with 111 yards rushing.

Mike Cloud came in periodically during the game to give Holmes a breather but didn't see much action. Tony Richardson spent most of the day opening holes for Priest Holmes. In the second quarter, he had a great run after the catch to get a first down on a third down play.

TE: Tony Gonzalez didn't get his first look in the game until the Chiefs were in the red zone, but Green missed him. He got his first catch in the second quarter over the middle when he out muscled the linebacker for a first down catch. Gonzalez almost made a great catch in the back of the end zone to open the second half but couldn't hang on. He was not a major factor in the game, but looked fine.

K: Morten Andersen pulled his right hamstring during warm-ups, and it showed from his first kick. His kickoff was very short to start the game. He made his first field goal attempt from 36 yards, but limped off the field. His second kickoff only made it out to the 23-yard line, giving the Jets excellent field position after the return. Andersen was temporarily replaced on kickoffs by punter Dan Stryzinski after two tries. His second field goal was good again from 40 yards. He finished the game with 3 field goals.

Chiefs Pass Defense: The Chiefs got pressure on Pennington at the start of the game. A big sack on the second Jets series of the game led to terrific field possession on the Jets 41 yard line. The Chiefs could not sustain the rush throughout the game largely as a result of having to respect the Jets rushing attack. Safety Greg Wesley continued his good play with an interception in the first half but left the game with an injured shoulder after the play. He did not return and Wesley's replacement Lyle West also left the game leaving the Chiefs very thin at defensive back for remainder of the game.

Chiefs Rush Defense: The Chiefs rushed defense didn't look good. On Martin's first quarter touchdown run, there was a huge hole in the middle of the line, and safety Jason Belser actually fell down after a nice move by Martin. Belser had seven solo tackles on the day and DT John Browning had two sacks.

New York Jets

QB: Chad Pennington looked like a mad man coming out during introductions as he head butted his teammates. The early part of the game saw the Pennington era start slowly as the first two drives stalled before he led the Jets to a touchdown on the third drive. Pennington has a nice touch on the ball when he throws. The Jets kept the ball on the ground quite a bit in the first half. In the second quarter, Pennington tripped over his own blocker, which led to a sack. On the same drive, Pennington threw deep into coverage and was picked off. His throw seemed to hang a bit too long in the air on the play. However, Pennington showed great poise and came back to lead the Jets to a score in the two-minute offense.

In the third quarter, Pennington missed Laveranues Coles on a number of deep patters where Coles appeared to be open. He looked more comfortable in the second half as he was finding his receivers in stride. Adjusting to the blitz, Pennington threw the ball deep to Moss for a touchdown. For this game, Pennington looked very good on short and intermediate passes, but seemed to hang a number of his long balls. If Pennington gets his timing down on his long passes, he could be dangerous. Overall, he looked very good.

WR: Laveranues Coles almost made a nice comeback catch deep down the field at the end of the first quarter, but couldn't hang on. He made a great catch late in the second quarter during the two-minute drill when he was popped during the catch. Coles had another acrobatic catch over the middle for a 19-yard gain and almost had a long touchdown catch on the same drive, but couldn't keep his feet in. Coles looked good during the game, and the announcers even noted that QB Pennington has admitted Coles is his favorite target. In the fourth quarter, Coles went down after a hit and was slow to get up but came back in the game after a play off.

Santana Moss almost got in the end zone on a crossing pattern at the end of the second quarter but was brought down just short. He made a nice run after the catch in the third quarter for a 13-yard gain. Moss was involved in the passing game, and looks like he could be a productive fantasy WR if Wayne Chrebet is out for a long period.

Wayne Chrebet did not play because of his twisted knee.

RB: Curtis Martin opened up the game with his longest run on the season, a 25-yard gain. His touchdown run was right up the middle of the Chiefs defense when he made a great move on the safety. He had a seven yard gain called back in the second quarter as a result of illegal motion by TE Anthony Becht. Shortly after, he broke another big 35-yard gain. Martin finished the first half with 89 yards rushing and a touchdown. Martin's second half production was not as impressive, but that was mainly the result of the Jets taking advantage of an injured Chiefs' secondary. Martin looked to be his old self. For the first time this season, Martin didn't show any signs of his ankle injury and seemed to make his cuts with confidence.

LaMont Jordan was not involved in the game plan as Martin came back looking healthy. Richie Anderson had a 16-yard gain in the Chief zone a nicely designed fake pitch to Martin and was used as a receiver out of the backfield periodically throughout the game.

TE: Anthony Becht caught his touchdown at the very end of the second quarter deep in the red zone. He was also targeted in the back of the end zone later in the game. Though he finished the game with only one catch, he continues to be a primary red zone target for the Jets.

K: John Hall just missed a 51-yard kick during the third quarter. He finished the game 1 for 2.

Jets Pass Defense: The Jets played decent coverage on the Chiefs early in the game, but were also getting help as the Chief's WR dropped a couple of balls. They played solid during the first half, but couldn't hold it together in the second half as Green and Holmes picked them apart.

Jets Rush Defense: The Jets rush defense didn't look good either in this game. Priest Holmes saw the ball early and they couldn't really stop him. They looked tired and were slow getting up from plays as the Chiefs dominated time of possession in the first half. LB Marvin Jones led the Jets with six solo tackles and two assists.
