Washington 31 at Tennessee 14

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Washington Redskins:

The story of the game was QB Patrick Ramsey, who came in for an injured Danny Wuerffel and proceeded to torch the Titans pass defense for 268 yards and two touchdowns. The Titan pass defense is weak, but he may have locked up the starting job for the rest of the year.

Inside the redzone today, the Redskins spread the ball around to all different receivers. Once they got inside the 5 (they were there only once), they used Davis to power the ball in.

RB Stephen Davis had a solid game (104 totals yards and two touchdowns), even though he only played three quarters due to an ugly second-quarter knee sprain. Owners should note that he left in the late 4th quarter with a noticeable limp. Watch closely.

RB Kenny Watson filled in for Davis while he was out and did a very impressive job, rushing for 62 yards on eight carries. He got huge holes from the line and was able to break into the secondary regularly.

Three Redskins receivers caught at least four balls with WRs Rod Gardner and Kevin Lockett scoring touchdowns. Lockett also threw for a touchdown.

Washington's pass defense was spectacular, intercepting Steve McNair three times and sacking him four times.

Tennessee Titans:

RB Eddie George looks done. Only 10 carries for 26 yards and he gave way to John Simon at the goalline.

QB Steve McNair threw for one touchdown and ran for another but was under pressure all day and forced several throws. He still managed to throw for 245 yards but threw three interceptions.

TE Frank Wycheck was McNair's go-to guy today, catching nine balls for 79 yards.

The pass defense continues to get lit up. Despite playing them pretty tight, Washington's bigger, more physical receivers had better position on Tennessee's DBs all day.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Washington Redskins

QB: Patrick Ramsey - Came in after Wuerffel hurt his shoulder on the first drive. Started slowly, took a few hits then began to dismantle the league's worst pass defense. Made just about every throw with accuracy and was his best on third down, converting 7 of his 13 chances. Showed nice touch on all different types of passes, including the deep ball. First touchdown pass to Rod Gardner was a timing route, right on the money. Seemed to see the field well and audibled often. Stayed in the pocket until he was forced to move up but showed the poise and pocket awareness of a veteran. Distributed the ball very well. Made good decisions all game and finished 20 of 34 for 268 yards and two touchdowns. Again, you have to take into consideration this was the Titan defense. Remember how good Shane Matthews looked in week 1 against Arizona. But Ramsey could be the missing key that Coach Steve Spurrier has been lacking in this offense. Barring injury, he should be the starter from here on out.

Danny Wuerffel - Injured his shoulder when he was pounded to the turf after a scramble on the first drive. Doesn't look like he'll start again, especially if Ramsey continues to make good decisions with the football. He wasn't worth having on your team a week ago, so he's even less valuable now.

RB: Stephen Davis - Less than 20 carries again but if he's going to run at a 5-yard clip and score a couple of times, you'll take it. Ran hard and looked especially good running off the left side. Sprained his knee in the 1st quarter and sat out until halftime with an ice pack attached to his leg. Returned and scored the go-ahead touchdown on the first drive of the second half. Began to limp midway through the 3rd quarter and was relieved by Kenny Watson. Came back in the 4th quarter as Washington was trying to milk the clock. Ran well but was limping badly as time wound down. Spurrier finally pulled him for good with about four minutes to go. Keep an eye on his status for next week.

Kenny Watson - Solidified his status as the #2 back with eight carries for 62 yards and two catches for 12 yards. A bit on the small side but showed quick feet and good burst. Tended to hunt for the hole instead of hitting it hard. Has no value unless Davis is down and even then, the offense becomes even more pass-heavy.

WR: Rod Gardner - Looks like Ramsey's favorite target (5-81-1). Ran much better routes this week and provided some key downfield blocks for Stephen Davis. Looked very focused and determined with no drops this week.

Kevin Lockett - Caught four balls for 58 yards and a touchdown. Also threw for a TD on a trick play that was nearly busted up when he fumbled the lateral from Ramsey. Made a couple of tough catches in traffic and blocked well in the running game.

Chris Doering - Made nice use of his size and strength versus smaller DBs. Caught four balls for 34 yards but three of those catches came on third down. It appears that he may be becoming a bigger part of the offense. With his size, he could be a very good possession receiver. Keep him on your watch list until he breaks out.

TE: Zeron Flemister - Caught two balls for 22 yards, including an important first down in the third quarter. Was supposed to have a breakout season but has been in the doghouse for running lazy routes. Wasn't given a lot of looks but it may be because the offense calls for everyone to get involved.

Redskins Pass Defense: Played very well. Intercepted McNair three times and sacked him four times. Gave up 245 passing yards but most of that came in the second half as Tennessee was playing catch-up. The unit seemed to be gelling but they still are not tackling well in the open field. Tennessee simply couldn't take advantage of it.

Redskins Rush Defense: Held Eddie George to 26 yards on ten carries. Dan Wilkinson and Daryl Gardener formed a brick wall all day. Still remain vulnerable to the big scramble, which makes you wonder what the linebackers are doing, although Trotter and Armstead each had nine tackles.

Redskins Special Teams: James Tuthill made all he attempted, including four extra points and a 31-yard field goal. Held Titans kick returners to a 15.8-yard average.

Tennessee Titans

QB: Steve McNair - McNair continues to be the most viable fantasy option on the team, throwing for 245 yards and a touchdown. Also tossed three picks and ran for 26 yards and a score. He looked good despite the three interceptions. His passes were pretty much on target all day, except for the deep ball that Smoot picked off. Eddie George's ineffectiveness is forcing Tennessee into more passing situations, something McNair owners like to hear.

RB: Eddie George - He's no longer the power back he used to be. He doesn't break many tackles and pretty much goes down upon initial contact. I'm sure the line play has a lot to do with his overall success but it appears that his power has been sapped by the injuries and 300+ carries a year. Finished with ten carries for 26 yards and a long run of six yards. Also wasn't much of a factor in the passing game, catching three for 14 yards. Gave way to rookie John Simon (one touchdown reception) at the goal line.

WR: Justin McCareins - Great size/speed guy who caught two balls on the first drive of the day. Then he was completely forgotten until the 4th quarter, when he added another reception. Ended up with three catches for 35 yards. May have worked his way into the rotation but he isn't getting open enough to be a real fantasy threat. Wait for his breakout game before you snag him.

Kevin Dyson - Smoot took him completely out of the game, except for three short catches. The only time McNair tried to find him deep, he was blanketed and Smoot made the interception. His routes looked sloppy and he seemed to be manhandled by the wiry Smoot. Dyson had an easy touchdown reception in the endzone, but dropped it.

Drew Bennett - Just like McCareins, started off with a couple of catches early and disappeared soon after. Finished with only two catches for 26 yards.

TE: Frank Wycheck - Definitely the go-to receiver in Tennessee's offense Sunday. Caught nine passes for 79 yards and showed terrific power running ability after the catch. His long was only 15 but he caught most of his balls in the flat and consistently broke a tackle or two trying to get the first down.

Titans Pass Defense: Can it get any worse? A rookie quarterback torched them in his first action of the year. Although the front seven produced some decent push, Ramsey too often had time to pick his target. And the corners are just too small to cover the bigger guys like Gardner and Doering.

Titans Rush Defense: It was hard to get a bead on the rush defense because Spurrier's offense is built around the pass, which leads to lots of draw plays and quick pitches. They didn't handle any of it well as the Redskins ran just about any play they wanted with positive results. But that may be attributed to the fact that they weren't able to focus on the run because the pass was so effective.

Titans Special Teams: Joe Nedney hit both of his extra point attempts easily. The kick return game was poor, failing to set the offense up with good field position.
