WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Jacksonville Jaguars:

This team looked good with Brunell in at QB. He was calm, cool and in total control but left the game early with a concussion after a violent Samari Rolle hit. When it was all said and done, the Jaguars attempted only 13 passes against one of the weakest pass defenses in the league.

Backup QB David Garrard is a young running quarterback who did great things with his feet but was not good in the passing game throwing for only 53 yards, 2 interceptions, and no TDs.

RB Fred Taylor looked much better than his 59 yards rushing would indicate. He looked very fluid running with vision, moves, speed, and he can cut on a dime. Healthy; he is one of the best in the league. However, with Brunell out the Titans put 8 in the box and there was nowhere for Fred to go.

Tennessee Titans:

RB Eddie George looked like the back he was 2 years ago. He hit the holes hard and ran with good power, always falling forward for extra yardage. His stats would have been even more impressive if his 45 yard td run wasn't called back on a penalty. He finished with 140 total yards and 2 TDs.

QB Steve McNair was efficient and in full command of the Titans offense. He threw extremely well out of the pocket while on the move and finished the day with 248 yards of total offense and 1 TD.

Kevin Carter looked more like the player who earned a Super Bowl ring in St. Louis a couple of years ago, gathering 2 sacks and reeking havoc in the opposing backfield.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Jacksonville Jaguars

QB: Mark Brunell - is the key to this offense. He started the game calm and cool in the pocket and was throwing the ball with zip until a vicious Samari Rolle hit took him out of the game with a concussion.

David Garrard - is a rookie quarterback and it showed this afternoon. His first NFL pass was an interception thrown right into good coverage. On the bright side, he is an extremely talented runner, rushing for 71 yards on the day including a 41 yard TD run.

RB: Fred Taylor - looked much better than his 59 yards on the day would indicate. The poor stats were mostly a result of Brunell's early exit from the game. The Titans had no respect for Garrard as a passer and hence put 8 in the box for the rest of the day. When Taylor had even the slightest space to operate he ran with authority. He displayed great speed, vision, cutback ability, and balance. He had a nice 16 yard run called back on a holding penalty. No other running back had a carry in the game.

WR: Jimmy Smith - looked as good as Jimmy Smith normally looks but without Brunell to throw him the ball, he finished with just 49 yards on 4 receptions.

Bobby Shaw - was the only other Jaguar receiver to catch a ball today. He caught 2 for 30 yards.

TE: No Jaguar tight ends caught a ball in this game.

Pass Defense: The Jaguars' corners play a very physical game. Jason Craft had a nice strip on Kevin Dyson causing a fumble that the Jags recovered. The Jags only had 1 sack on the day but McNair was often forced out of the pocket.

Rush Defense: The Jags have a very solid defensive line. They are especially stout in the middle with tackles Marcus Stroud and John Henderson.

Special Teams: Returners Elvis Joseph and Stacey Mack are nothing special.

Tennessee Titans

QB: Steve McNair - was a field general today. He controlled the offense well and was nearly impossible to sack. He scrambled out of the pocket often and threw very accurate passes on the run. None of his receivers were good enough to do much after the catch, as his best wide out, Derrick Mason, was out with injury. Therefore, he spread the ball around hitting 8 different receivers in the game.

RB: Eddie George - was the Eddie of old today. His acceleration through the holes was impressive and he ran with great power, always falling forward for extra yardage. His stats would have been even better if his 45 yard TD run wasn't called back on a penalty. He finished with 140 total yards and 2 TDs.

Greg Comella - left the game with a shoulder injury and was replaced my Mike Green.

WR: Drew Bennett - was the go to receiver today with the absence of Derrick Mason. He is a tall lanky receiver with good speed and soft hands. He caught 6 balls for 68 yards and was inches away from a TD on one play.

Kevin Dyson - his most memorable play of the day was a fumble on his own 20 yard line. He was not impressive and doesn't seem to have the trust of Steve McNair. He finished with 4 catches for 37 yards.

TE: Frank Wycheck - remains one of McNair's favorite targets, but gets less looks than he used due to the emergence of Erron Kinney. Wycheck caught 3 for 21 yards.

Erron Kinney - is a sure handed tight end who is being used more and more in the Titans passing game. He caught 4 for 44 today, out gaining Wycheck.

Pass Defense: Samari Rolle is a tough, hard hitting corner. He took Mark Brunell out of the game with a vicious blow. Kevin Carter was in the quarterback's face all day. He had 2 sacks and many pressures. He once stripped Garrard of the ball; but it was called an incomplete pass.

Rush Defense: With no respect for David Garrard, the Titans crowded the box all day long and didn't allow much rushing from Fred Taylor. However, Garrard was very effective on the ground. Randall Godfrey was out with injury, which made them more susceptible to the run than they might be with him in.

Special Teams: Joe Nedney went missing from 32 yards out. The Titans miss Derrick Mason in the return game.
