San Francisco 28 at Seattle 21

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

San Francisco 49ers:

Jeff Garcia is starting to come around after a rocky first few games. He threw for 202 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also contributed 48 yards on the ground. He kept a scoring drive alive with a 17 yard run on 3rd and 10. Garcia kept the final drive alive with a key 9 yard run on 3rd and 2.

Terrell Owens had his best game of the season. He caught 6 passes for 81 yards and 2 touchdowns. He was seen yelling on the sideline when Garcia didn't throw a pass to him in the end zone. He was featured on the next drive. After his second touchdown, he pulled a marker out of his sock and signed the ball for a friend. Are you allowed to carry pens in your socks?

Tai Streets started for the injured J.J. Stokes. He performed well gaining 66 yards. That's more yards than Stokes has gained in any single game this season.

Seattle Seahawks:

Mild worry signal for Alexander owners - Mack Strong caught a short TD and had a 5 yard run on 1st and goal from the 6.

Trent Dilfer performed well. There was no sign of his injury and he even ran the ball for 21 yards and looked pretty good doing it. He threw bullets over the middle of the field all game. He ended up with 212 yards and a touchdown. Unfortunately, he also threw 2 costly interceptions. The second of the 2 interceptions, was tipped by a defensive lineman, before it landed in Ahmed Plummer's hands.

Bobby Engram had a breakout day. He took a punt 61 yards for a touchdown, showing surprising speed. Engram looked over his shoulder several times during the runback, wondering where the defensive players were. He was Dilfer's number one target, pulling in 6 receptions for 85 yards.

Shaun Alexander ran hard all day, but there wasn't much room for him. Most of his 96 yards on the ground came on a 42 yard run. He added a 1-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

San Francisco 49ers

QB: Jeff Garcia had plenty of time to hang back in the pocket today and throw sharp passes. He threw for just over 200 yards, 2 touchdowns to Owens, and no interceptions. When all of his receivers were covered he took off running for a total of 48 yards. He kept a scoring drive alive with a 17 yard run on 3rd and 10. Garcia kept the final drive alive with a key 9 yard run on 3rd and 2.

RB: Garrison Hearst started the game. He gained 41 yards on 10 carries. He also added 33 yards on 3 receptions. It was a mild surprise that he didn't explode against a very average Seattle run defense. He added a 2-point conversion after Terrell Owens 2nd touchdown, to give the 49ers a 7-point lead. He might have had a scoring opportunity when San Francisco had the ball at the Seattle 6 with Hearst in the game. But a False Start penalty on the 49ers plus a sack on 2nd down moved them back to FG range.

Kevan Barlow was the stronger back today. It seems like any time he touches the ball something big might happen. He's a much stronger back this year after having worked out with Terrell Owens in the off-season. He gained 68 yards on 12 carries and added a 6-yard touchdown run. His final run of the game, a 26-yarder on 3rd and 10, made sure that the 49ers could run the clock out to end the game.

WR: Terrell Owens was himself today. He caught 6 passes for 84 yards and 2 touchdowns. An incomplete pass to him on 3rd and 6 turned into a Shawn Springs penalty and an automatic 1st down. One play later Garcia connected with him for a 37-yard touchdown and the game winner. Earlier in the game, he and was open for a TD but Garcia was pressured and did not make the throw. He complained on the sidelines for several minutes. He was then featured on the next offensive possession.

On the play everyone is talking about - After his 2nd TD, Owens pulled a marker out of his sock and signed the ball for his Financial Advisor sitting in the stands. It's interesting in that his advisor also works for Seattle Cornerback Shawn Springs and was a guest in Springs' seats.

Tai Streets started for the injured J.J. Stokes. He performed well gaining 66 yards. That is more yards than Stokes has gained in any single game this season. He took advantage of the Owens double coverage quite well.

Cedrick Wilson, a 2nd year player, caught the first two passes of his career today, while gaining 18 yards.

TE: Eric Johnson contributed a few blocks, but not much else. He didn't get a single look from Garcia.

San Francisco Pass Defense - Ahmed Plummer and Zack Bronson each snagged an interception. As a whole, this defense played strong. They didn't allow any passes for over 20 yards and kept Dilfer throwing short passes over the middle. The only touchdown they let up was a 9-yard pass to Mack Strong.

San Francisco Rush Defense - With the exception of Alexander's 42 yard run, they kept him in check for most of the game.

San Francisco Special Teams - They let Bobby Engram return a punt for 61 yards. They should have caught him. He isn't the fastest player out there. Jose Cortez was perfect today. He went 2-2 on field goals (37, 29).

Seattle Seahawks

QB: Trent Dilfer performed well. There was no sign of his injury and he even ran the ball for 21 yards and looked pretty good doing it. He threw bullets over the middle of the field all game. He ended up with 212 yards and a touchdown. Unfortunately, he also threw 2 costly interceptions. The interception by Zack Bronson, in Seattle's opening drive was poorly thrown. The second interception, was tipped by a lineman, before it ended up in Ahmed Plummer's hands. His favorite target was Bobby Engram.

RB: Shaun Alexander ran hard all day, but there wasn't much room for him. John Madden noted that he is hard to tackle because he runs at several different speeds.. You think you're about to tackle him and he just changes gears on you. Most of his 96 yards on the ground came on a 42 yard run. He added a 1-yard touchdown in the third quarter. He caught 4 passes for 25 yards. . He limped off the field and sat down for a couple of plays, but returned soon after.

Worry signal for Alexander owners - Mack Strong caught a short TD and had a 5 yard run on 1st and goal from the 6.

WR: Bobby Engram had a breakout day. He took a punt 61 yards for a touchdown, showing surprising speed. Engram looked over his shoulder several times during the runback, wondering where the defensive players were. He was Dilfer's number one target, pulling in 6 receptions for 85 yards.

Darrell Jackson faced a lot of strong coverage. He pulled in 5 passes for 53 yards. He still hasn't scored a touchdown this season.

Koren Robinson caught 2 passes for 24 yards. Trent Dilfer's first interception was intended for him. He also fumbled a 16-yard pass, but recovered it himself.

TE: Itula Mili caught 2 balls for 16 yards. He caught another pass, during Seattle's final drive, for 10 yards, but it was called back because he pushed off of a defender. The call was questionable.
