Buffalo 23 at Miami 10

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Buffalo Bills:

RB Travis Henry turned in excellent stats against an excellent defense. More important, he looked great in doing so. Maybe he was in a zone, but it seemed like Henry ran exactly how he needed to on each run. On most carries, he took the handoff and burst towards the hole. On some carries, he took the handoff and allowed the play to develop. He had a few long runs (longest was 34 yards) and was able to turn the corner a couple of times against the speedy Dolphins defense.

The 70-yard TD from Bledsoe to Moulds was picture perfect. Bledsoe led Moulds perfectly, and Moulds was able to beat Sam Madison and Brock Marion to the endzone. Aside from that play, the Buffalo passing game was largely silent.

Miami Dolphins:

QB Ray Lucas was terrible. Maybe Jay Fiedler isn't so bad after all. Lucas turned in a QB rating of 26.3 and was responsible for a half-dozen turnovers (4 INTs and 2 fumbles). He looked very uncomfortable for most of the game.

WRs Chris Chambers and Oronde Gadsden were sorely missed. Cris Carter will be taking his physical on Monday. He is needed.

Speaking of WRs, Bonnie Bernstein reported that Gadsden will test the free agency waters after the season and likely will not be a Dolphin next season. It seems Gadsden was far from impressed with Miami's latest 2-year offer.

RB Ricky Williams ran hard and dished out some punishment but had little help from anyone else. Still, he was fun to watch.

The Dolphins incurred several (supposedly minor) injuries. Those hurt include Ricky Williams (knee bruise), Dedric Ward (calf bruise), and Robert Edwards (knee sprain).

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Buffalo Bills

QB - Drew Bledsoe (15 / 31 for 182 / 1 TD / 0 INT) was harassed most of the day and was generally content to take the safe play. Often, the safe play was the throwaway, which greatly diminished the completion percentage but kept bad things from happening. Bledsoe did take a couple of long shots as well and connected deep with Moulds on a 70-yard TD. Not the huge numbers we've grown to expect from Bledsoe but led his team to the big win.

RB - Travis Henry (22 for 132 / 1 rec for 5 / 0 TD) was very impressive against an extremely tough defense. Henry looked like an excellent RB. When needed, he hit the hole hard. When needed, he let the play develop. He was impressive. Runs hard and almost always gains yardage after contact.

Larry Centers (5 rec for 51 / 0 TD) will continue to contribute primarily as a receiver with the way Henry is running.

WR - Eric Moulds (3 for 81 / 1 TD) was quiet for most of the day but spoke volumes with his 70-yard TD catch. Note that Moulds played after a few days of limited practice due to back spasms. As quick and fluid as he looked on the TD, he was no lock to play this week.

Peerless Price (4 for 25 / 0 TD) was covered well most of the day but was able to get open a few times.

Josh Reed (1 for 9 / 0 TD) can really block down field. His blocking was note-worthy on at least two separate plays. You don't find that often in a WR, and you almost never see it in a rookie WR. Too bad he can't get a fantasy point for each block. As many have already stated, he has an excellent future in this league.

TE - Jay Riemersma (1 for 11 / 0 TD) caught a pass. There's nothing more to see here folks.

Pass Defense - One of two things occurred here: 1) The Bills pass defense became infinitely better than in the previous six weeks, or 2) Ray Lucas isn't very good. Coming into this game, the Bills had intercepted exactly zero passes. Coming out of this game, the Bills have intercepted exactly four passes. If this game were played in Detroit, there would have been octopi thrown on the field for Nate Clements as he picked three on his own (and had a fourth hit off of his hands). Great results here for the Bills, but it was largely due to Ray Lucas self-destructing and the absences of Chris Chambers and Oronde Gadsden.

Rush Defense - With the Miami passing game posing no real threat, the Bills were able to sell out a bit to stop the run. They did give up 132 yards on the ground, but Ricky Williams was held under a hundred and only accumulated a 3.0 ypc average. NT Pat Williams had a good game and was able knife through the line on several occasions. He finished with eight total tackles (a huge number for a defensive tackle) and fumble recovery.

Miami Dolphins

QB - Ray Lucas (13 / 33 for 165 / 1 TD / 4 INTs) came out of the gates and looked like he would turn in a quality performance. He did not. He did everything poorly. Here's a quote from Lucas on his own performance, "The way I played today was probably the worst a quarterback has ever played in the history of the NFL." No argument here, Ray. Lucas was also charged with two lost fumbles on botched hand-offs. He was horrid. It should be noted that the Miami receiving corps were extremely thin. Still, Lucas was off the mark more often than not. The only real positive is that he and the Dolphins are off next week.

RB - Ricky Williams (25 for 97 / 1 rec for 22 / 0 TDs) ran hard on every carry and delivered some hard licks on opposing defenders. It's too bad his QB was so pitiful as the Bills were able to stack the line. With any kind of legitimate passing threat, Williams would have had a huge day.

Robert Edwards (2 for 9 / 2 rec for 12 / 0 TDs) is a pretty good third down back. Of his four touches, three resulted in Miami 1st downs.

Travis Minor (2 for 8 / 0 TD) was not memorable.

Rob Konrad (2 rec for 13 / 0 TD) was not memorable.

WR - James McKnight (3 for 42 / 0 TD) suffered along with his QB. It's obvious why Chambers and Gadsden won the starting jobs.

Dedric Ward (1 for 15 / 0 TD) will get mocked relentlessly in the film room this week. On one of Nate Clements INTs, Ward had a chance to make a bone-jarring hit. Instead, he meekly ran into Clements and was summarily slammed to the ground by Clements. Ward looked like a kicker.

TE - Randy McMichael (3 for 35 / 1 TD) looked good for a couple of series but then disappeared for about three-fourths of the game.

Desmond Clark (1 for 26 / 0 TD) had a very good catch on the TD drive, but then hung out with McMichael in the witness protection program.

Pass Defense - The Dolphins held Bledsoe in check for most the game, but were burned once on a 70-yard TD to Moulds. They failed to pick off a pass, but Bledsoe was sacked 5 times and hurried often. Considering how potent the Buffalo passing game has been this season, the Miami pass defense turned in an excellent effort.

Rush Defense - On the other hand, the run defense was lackluster at best as Travis Henry ran at a 6.0 ypc clip. Miami gave up a few long runs and rarely stuffed the Buffalo ground game. Zach Thomas had a dozen total tackles and sack.
