Jacksonville 10 at Baltimore 17

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Jacksonville Jaguars:

If you have PK Hayden Epstein on your fantasy squad, drop him and don't think twice. Tom Coughlin went for it on 4th and 2 and 4th and 7 from inside the 25-yard line twice instead of attempting a field goal.

QB Mark Brunell showed no signs of the concussion slowing him down this week. Of his three interceptions, two were deflected at the line of scrimmage, and the third was a last desperation throw that ended the game.

RB Fred Taylor could very well be the most talented running back in the NFL. He was shifty, speedy, and showed some surprising toughness en route to 151 yards rushing and a touchdown. He also caught 8 passes for 46 yards.

Baltimore Ravens:

All World NFL linebacker Ray Lewis did not play. He was still suffering from his shoulder injury, but was very vocal on the sidelines and encouraged a young, hungry defense that is growing up very quickly.

The Baltimore offense continues to be grind it out football behind RB Jamal Lewis, combined with spectacular plays by the gifted TE Todd Heap. Lewis carried the rock an astounding 28 times.

QB Chris Redman continues to be efficient on the field. He once again only passed for 152 yards, but threw two TD receptions to Todd Heap.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Jacksonville Jaguars

QB: Mark Brunell withstood another punishing afternoon, nearly tying the game at the end. He wound up with 3 INT's (2 on deflections) and did not have a touchdown pass. Jacksonville seemed to rely on Fred Taylor's running, and Brunell didn't even hook up with WR Jimmy Smith until late in the first half.

RB: Fred Taylor ground out 151 yards rushing and 46 yards through the air. He was the focal point of the Jaguars offensive attack. He showed again that he's one of the most talented backs in the NFL today, but of course anyone that owns him in their fantasy league cringes every time he gets hit. Jacksonville seems intent on feeding him the ball.

RB: Stacy Mack only carried the ball 3 times for 4 yards, and was only in the game to spell Fred Taylor. No vulture sighting today.

WR: Jimmy Smith led all receivers with 7 catches (11 targets) for 63 yards. He did not catch a pass until late in the first half, and was never able to break free from DB Chris McAlister. Brunell was under pressure all day and may not have had time to find Smith even when he was open.

Bobby Shaw caught 3 balls for 41 yards, and converted 2 critical third down plays. Baltimore opened the game with double coverage on WR Jimmy Smith, and it was Shaw's play that forced the Ravens to lay a defender off on the other side.

Patrick Johnson only caught one ball all day, but it was a nice 33-yard reception that he almost broke free for more. He is used sparingly.

TE: Kyle Brady rumbled for 37 yards on 4 catches, but dropped a crucial pass that had been deflected during Jacksonville's final drive. He was not looked to in the red zone.

Pete Mitchell only nabbed one ball during the day, and was used mostly for blocking purposes.

Rush Defense: For the second straight week, the Jaguar front was punished. Jamal Lewis' bruising running style proved very effective against the smallish front seven. Lewis ran for 119 yards on 28 carries, wearing out the Jaguar D.

Pass Defense: CB Jason Craft covered TE Todd Heap, but could not stop Heap from getting to the end zone twice. The secondary played hard and is full of heavy hitters. Rookie DE John Henderson continues to grow into his role as a pass rusher, and had a sack on the day.

Special Teams: Tom Coughlin showed absolutely no confidence in K Hayden Epstein, declining to kick 2 field goals that would have been less than 40 yards. The Jaguar return men were mediocre at best, but their kick coverage was good.

Baltimore Ravens

QB: Chris Redman continues to be the ideal quarterback for the Baltimore system. He was a modest 14/28 for 152 yards, but with 2 TD's and NO interceptions once again. His confidence can only grow with every solid performance.

RB: Jamal Lewis is well on his way to becoming one of the dominant runners again in the league. He had 28 carries for 119 yards, and just plain wore down the Jaguar defense. With the Raven defense playing well and Redman not making mistakes, Lewis could continue to see the ball roughly 30 times a game.

WR: Not unlike in Kansas City, The WR is a sometimes forgotten position in the city of Baltimore. Brandon Stokely and Travis Taylor continue to get looks, but their opportunities are limited. They only had the ball thrown their way 10 times total. Not much fantasy value here. Brandon Stokely was knocked down at the 1-yard line, and then Todd Heap scored on the next play.

Stokely suffered the ugliest play of the week when he tripped over himself on a reverse play only to pick himself up and fumble.

TE: Todd Heap is quickly becoming one of the favorite players to watch. Every week he makes a catch or two worthy of the highlight reel, and today was no different. He netted 2 TD's. Jacksonville had a defensive back and a linebacker covering him at times, and it was still not enough. Watching Shannon Sharpe for the last two years must have helped.

Rush Defense: Without Ray Lewis, the Baltimore D gave a strong effort against RB Fred Taylor. He is too good of a runner to hold down, and many of his 151-yards rushing came in the second half. They'll obviously be stronger with the return of Lewis.

Pass Defense: Mark Brunell struggled to find open receivers for most of the afternoon, and Chris McAlister did a great job of shutting down WR Jimmy Smith, who had torched Baltimore in the past. A good, solid effort. This is a solid young group of players who are hungry to prove they can beat you every week. A dangerous situation for any offense.

Special Teams: No 107-yard returns this week, but no breakdowns either. K Matt Stover did miss a 39 yard field goal at the end of the first half, but he's dependable. They seem to really miss KR/PR Jermaine Lewis.
