Washington 9 at Green Bay 30

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Washington Redskins:

QB Patrick Ramsey continues to make folks question his outstanding game in week 5 vs a weak Tennessee Defense. Ramsey was unimpressive with the stats he posted and more importantly, how he looked in the pocket.

The Redskins couldn't get their offense going today. Ramsey didn't get any time from the offensive line and was sacked 5 times. The only plays that the offense was able to execute on a regular basis were short end-arounds and screens. They were unable to score any touchdowns, scoring only field goals.

RB Stephen Davis was given the ball more than in the past (24 carries), but was handled by the Green Bay defense. They were blitzing constantly, and Davis was unable to get any long runs. Coach Steve Spurrier does seem to realize that Davis is his best player.

Green Bay Packers:

QB Brett Favre left the game in the third quarter with a sprained knee. Green Bay is cautiously optimistic at this point but we'll know more pending an MRI Monday. The Packers have their BYE week this week, so it is possible that Favre could not miss a start. While Favre was playing, he looked very good, completing 11 of 14 for 89 yards. Doug Pederson came in for Favre. Pederson looked solid, but not spectacular.

RB Ahman Green had a great game. The Redskins simply had no answer for him. He ran for 88 yards on 24 carries with three touchdowns. Green constantly broke tackles and had several long runs into the secondary.

Packer Defense: When they refrained from making costly penalties, Green Bay's pass defense was dominant. They sacked Ramsey 5 times with a combination of good pass rush and excellent coverage. They knocked Ramsey down several times in addition to the sacks. However, this is the second week in a row that Green Bay has given up significant rushing yardage (146 total) despite winning.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Washington Redskins

QB: Patrick Ramsey didn't look good today at all. He lost 3 fumbles, and looked uneasy in the pocket. He is reluctant to throw the ball away or scramble for yardage if he is under pressure. Ramsey didn't have the poise that he showed two weeks ago against Tennessee. He finished 10 of 24 with only 135 yards.

Ramsey looked confident early in the first drive into Green Bay territory then looked terrible with errant passes in the red zone as they had to settle for a field goal. This was typical of him all day even in a ball control offense that held the ball for 18:30 in the first half. He rarely threw accurate passes over 10 yards. Before the game, Ramsey apparently admitted that this was the coldest game he'd ever played in (game time temperature was 44 degrees) Washington is cold in November and December plus he's on the road in New York and Philadelphia in the next two months.

RB: Stephen Davis looked impressive routinely picking up 5, 6, and 7 yards a run. He averaged 3.8 yards per carry and it appears with 24 carries in a losing effort that he will be seeing many more touches if the offense stays conservative. He had a couple runs called back on holding penalties and would have easily had over 100 yards with those runs.

WR: Chris Doering and Derrius Thompson started the game. Doering was quiet today, catching only one pass for two yards.

Thompson had a great game, catching 5 balls for 89 yards. He had a 47 yard reception where he was forced out of bounds at the six. He also had 48 yards rushing, all from four end-arounds.

Rod Gardner started the game as the third receiver, but saw more playing time as the game progressed. He finished as the Redskins second leading receiver with 3 receptions for 35 yards. Good news for Gardner owners in that even though he wasn't able to come up with the catch, he was targeted several times on key plays including a wide open Endzone target that Ramsey badly overthrew.

TE: No Redskins tight end had any receptions as Zeron Flemister and Walter Rasby were used mainly to block.

Rush Defense: Ahman Green was held to 88 yards and this unit had 4 turnovers by their offense to contend with. Green Bay got the ball inside the Washington 39 yard line on their final 4 possessions of the game to seal the win. Still, their tackling is inadequate and when it counted they couldn't stop or even contain Ahman Green.

Pass Defense: The pass defense did a good job of limiting the Packers to only 167 passing yards, but that didn't matter as Ahman green scored three touchdowns. Fred Smoot dropped two passes that would have been interceptions.

Green Bay Packers

QB: Brett Favre left the game in the third quarter with a sprained knee. The extent of the injury is still unknown. His knee was bent backwards and twisted as LaVar Arrington sacked him. It looked painful and Favre seemed shaken at the time although he later downplayed it saying he wanted to return to the game. It's important to remember that sack was the only time either he or Doug Pederson was hit all day. The Packer line is doing an incredibly good job in both pass and run blocking. Before leaving Favre was extremely efficient completing 11 of 14 passes.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported later that the knee ligaments appeared stable and that the team was optimistic this would not be a long term situation. Coach Mike Sherman said that at this point, they felt Favre might play in the next game (Monday night in week 9 after a BYE week coming up) Although the MRI Monday will tell the tale.

Doug Pederson came on when Favre left. He wasn't asked to throw too much as the Packers were conservative with their lead. He finished 9/15 for 78 yards.

Both quarterbacks did a good job of spreading the ball around to eight different receivers.

RB: Ahman Green had a great game today, rushing for three touchdowns that he made look easy. On a couple of occasions, he ran through LaVar Arrington and over Jeremiah Trotter. He had numerous runs into the secondary. Green also had 3 receptions for 12 yards. It should be noted that he did lose another fumble and also nearly fumbled running untouched through the hole on his 24 yard touchdown run.

Fullback William Henderson was the second leading receiver for the Packers today with four receptions for 32 yards.

WR: No receiver stood out today as Favre and Pederson spread the ball around to eight different receivers. Donald Driver led the way with 4 receptions for 44 yards.

Terry Glenn was disappointing with only one reception. In past games, Favre's shown a slight tendency to force the ball to Glenn a bit but this wasn't there today.

TE: Bubba Franks had a good day with three receptions for 19 yards. David Martin also had a good day with three receptions for 17 yards. Franks was targeted on Green Bay's first play in the red zone.

Rush Defense: Stephen Davis had some nice holes to run through and this is the second week in a row that Green Bay has given up significant rushing yardage (146 total) despite winning.

Pass Defense: Packer Pass Defense: When they refrained from making costly penalties, Green Bay's pass defense was dominant. They sacked Ramsey 5 times with a combination of good pass rush and excellent coverage. Gilbert Brown seemed to be everywhere and they knocked Ramsey down several times in addition to the sacks.

Special Teams: PK Ryan Longwell seems to be back on his game, making all 3 of his field goals and all 3 of his point-after attempts.
