Cleveland 24 at NY Jets 21

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Cleveland Browns:

QB Tim Couch had to carry the load for this team today as they were playing from behind for most of the game and the rushing attack was largely ineffective. Throwing for over 300 yards and 2 TDs, Couch was hitting receivers in stride all afternoon and looked strong.

Jamel White got the start at running back and looked decent but never had running room. He managed a measly 1.8 yards per carry. He did catch 6 balls for 42 yards.

Couch spread the ball around a lot, keeping any one player from being a good fantasy option. 8 different players caught passes and 7 caught at least 3.

New York Jets:

Curtis Martin looked better than his stats would indicate. He rushed only for 65 yards on 18 carries, but he ran like the Martin of old and showed no lingering effects of his ankle injury. He was used often in the passing game, catching 4 balls for 39 yards.

Chad Pennington impressed at quarterback. He throws a pretty spiral and runs the offense with poise and confidence. He was very efficient, completing 19/26 for 183 yards and 2 TDs. The 1 interception was not his fault as it bounced off the stone hands of Anthony Becht into the air where Earl Little picked it off.

Santana Moss is one of the most electric return men in the NFL, returning a punt for a 63 yard TD with scary speed and dangerous agility.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Cleveland Browns

QB: Tim Couch - Looked quite poised and accurate today completing 33/49 for 307 yards and 2 TDs without throwing an interception. He would have had even better numbers if the wide receivers didn't drop as many catchable balls as they did. He looked very comfortable and found his rhythm early, hitting receivers in stride all afternoon while enjoying nice protection from his line. Unfortunately for fantasy owners, Couch spread the ball around to 8 different receivers not allowing any 1 of them to accrue big stats. Impressively, 7 different players caught at least 3 balls.

RB: Jamel White - got the start at running back and looked a lot better than his stats would indicate. He's a versatile back and is shifty and elusive and catches the ball extremely well out of the backfield. Unfortunately, the offensive line did not play well in the run game today and White was often gang tackled at the line. He finished with a measly 25 yards on 14 carries but added an additional 42 yards with 6 catches.

William Green - only got 3 carries on the day and did not make the most of them. He ran for 8 yards. He was unimpressive. In his defense; he didn't' really have anywhere to go.

WR: Kevin Johnson - played well but didn't get the number of targets he has in the past because of the fact that the Browns have a number of good, young wide receivers and Tim Couch spreads the ball around well. He finished with 5 catches for 73 yards.

Quincy Morgan - Was targeted a lot by Couch and has nice size and strength. However, he dropped some catchable balls in traffic. He ended the game with 4 receptions for 40 yards.

Dennis Northcutt - is the team's premier deep threat. He showed good speed and got good separation from DBs catching 4 balls for a team high 76 yards.

Andre Davis - was just one more receiving threat for the Browns. He's fast and has a bright future. He caught 3 balls for 29 yards including the only WR TD of the day.

TE: Marc Campbell - had his best day of the season catching 7 balls for 34 yards and a TD. Most of his production came in the second half when the Jets decided to blanket the WRs leaving Campbell open in the middle of the field.

Aaron Shea - is a fantasy afterthought, catching 3 balls for 10 yards.

Pass Defense: The Cleveland secondary is banged up and allowed New York receivers to make some plays. The pass rush was nothing special with only 1 sack on the day. This may have been a result of Pennington's quick decision making.

Rush Defense: The Browns only allowed Curtis Martin 65 yards on the ground.

Special Teams: Andre Davis is an exciting return man and although he didn't break one today, it was clear that he could at any time. The Browns blocked a field goal attempt for the third time this year; sealing the victory at the end of the game.

New York Jets

QB: Chad Pennington - was impressive for the Jets today. He was in full command of the offense and made quick decisions the entire afternoon. He was poised and accurate and throws a pretty spiral. He started the game 7/7, making the right reads and hitting his receivers in stride. The 1 interception he did throw on the day was not his fault as it went off the stone hands of Anthony Becht and into a waiting DB's gloves.

RB: Curtis Martin - looked better than his stats show and ran like the old Curtis Martin. Although his rushing total was only 65 yards, it seemed like he rushed for a lot more. He was quick and shifty and looked as fast as he ever has. He showed no lingering effects of the ankle injury that hampered him earlier in the year and Lamont Jordan didn't get one carry in the game. Pennington looked to him often as a check down; he caught 4 balls for 39 yards.

WR: Laveranues Coles - made a nice spin move after the catch to get himself into the endzone on a hitch route for 37 yards. He looked very good today and Pennington seems to favor him among the receivers. He finished with 5-61-1.

Wayne Chrebet - used his body well to shield the defender when catching his 8 yard TD. He did have a costly fumble late in the game on his longest reception of the day - 24 yards. His final total was 40 yards on 4 receptions and 1 TD.

Santana Moss - only caught 2 balls for 23 yards.

TE: Anthony Becht - caught 1 ball for 4 yards. Showed some poor hands. He dropped 2 balls, with one being intercepted by Earl Little.

Pass Defense: John Abraham penetrated the line often sacking Couch once. Aaron Beasley is an excellent cover corner; breaking up a number of plays. The unit as whole allowed Tim Couch over 300 yards so obviously they aren't as tight as they'd like to be.

Rush Defense: The defensive line substituted often keeping fresh and not allowing any room at all for Cleveland runners. Sam Cowart had an impressive 10 solo tackles on the day.

Special Teams: Santana Moss is one of the most electric return men in the NFL, returning a punt for a 63 yard TD with scary speed and dangerous agility. On another return he tripped on what would have been a long gainer.
