WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Houston Texans:

The Houston Texans pulled off their first road win and their second win of the season against a division rival. The win snapped a five game losing streak for Houston.

QB David Carr's 184 passing yards proved to be enough to lead Houston past Jacksonville. Carr had two fumbles during the exchange from center. He lost one of them. On a positive note, Carr didn't throw an interception again for the 3rd straight game. His 1 yard touchdown pass to Billy Miller capped an 80 yard, 10 play drive to give Houston an 18 - 12 lead early in the fourth quarter.

TE Billy Miller had the best game of his young career. The 40 yard catch to set up his touchdown was the longest catch he's made in the NFL. Miller led the Texans in receiving with 78 yards.

The most penalized team in the league added 8 more to their season. The defense give up big penalties at key times to keep Jacksonville drives alive.

Offensively, Houston only had 242 total yards.

One big play came on special teams with only 3 minutes left in the game. Jacksonville punted the ball to Houston's Jabar Gaffney. Gaffney fielded the ball and lateraled to cornerback Aaron Glenn. Glenn returned the punt 48 yards to the Jacksonville 33 yard line, setting up the game winning field goal by Kris Brown.

Jacksonville Jaguars:

Rookie John Henderson is proving to be a nice replacement for the defensive line. His sack on David Carr was a very loud pop as he came straight up the middle.

QB Mark Brunell had a horrible game but didn't commit a turnover. He seemed off target often missing wide open receivers. He was also flagged for delay of game penalty on the Texans 21 yard line on 3rd and 8. You have to wonder if he's still having trouble from the latest concussion.

The Jaguars only had 290 yards of total offense. They continually had good field position to start their drives because of good returns from Bobby Shaw and Elvis Joseph.

Fred Taylor was held in check most of the night because of his style of running compared to the Texan's style of defense. The cruel joke continues as a healthy Taylor was pulled again at the goalline for Mack to score a TD.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Houston Texans

QB - David Carr didn't throw an interception for the third straight game. He did, however, fumble two snaps from center, losing one of them. Carr hit Billy Miller in stride for 40 yards during his 80 yard touchdown drive. Carr was 11 - 18 for 184 yards and the one lone touchdown to Billy Miller. Carr added 14 rushing yards but was sacked 4 times.

He played with poise and confidence while leading his team in on the road.

RB - Jonathan Wells started the game for the Texans but was outplayed again by James Allen. Wells was far from impressive rushing 17 times for 27 yards. He did have a 3 yard touchdown run for the first Houston points.

James Allen came in at the end of the first half and provided a spark for the rather dismal offense. Allen finished with 48 total yards.

Rookie FB Jarrod Baxter had one reception for 5 yards.

WR - Rookie Jabar Gaffney led the WRs in receiving with 3 catches for 60 yards. He had a long catch of 27 yards. Gaffney lateraled to Aaron Glen on a punt return to set up the game winning field goal. He also had a 2 point conversion catch.

Corey Bradford was surprisingly quiet with only one catch for 16 yards. The Texans didn't try any home run passes to the WRs.

TE - Billy Miller was more than just a red zone threat in this game. He had 3 big catches in the game for 78 yards and a touchdown. The first catch was for 37 yards. He got most of the yards after the catch as he fought for the extra yards, shedding defenders. The second was a perfectly thrown 40 yard catch to set up his one yard touch down pass from Carr. Miller did a great job of hanging onto this ball as the defender hit him in the end zone.

Jabari Holloway is a second year player out of Notre Dame. He had 2 catches for 17 yards in the game. This is also his career total.

K - Kris Brown won the game for the Texans by hitting a 45 yard field goal. He also made a 43 yard kick, but missed an earlier kick of 45 yards.

Texan's Run Defense - The rush defense did a very good job keeping Fred Taylor from running away with the game. They allowed a couple of big plays but really did an outstanding job considering the talent they were up against. Stacey Mack caused a few problems for them. The Texans did well against Taylor's cut back style of running but Mack hit the hole much faster and proved to be more difficult for them to contain. They gave up 126 total yards on the ground.

Texan's Pass Defense - Sacked Brunell 5 times but allowed Jimmy Smith a couple big plays including a 25 yard touchdown. But even on that play, the Texan's flushed Brunell out of the pocket with good pressure. LB Kailee Wong sacked Brunell on second and third down on the Jags final drive. This sealed the win for the Texans.

Jacksonville Jaguars

One of the Jaguar faithful fans held a sign that mocked a line from a George Strait song "All Our Ex's Play in Texas". The Texans took Seth Payne and Gary Walker from their defensive line as well as Tony Boselli from their offensive line in the expansion draft. Jeff Posey also used to be a Jaguar as well as Dom Capers.

QB - Mark Brunell looked shaky. He completed less than 50% of his passes but was able to hit Jimmy Smith for a 25 yard touch down while rolling out of the pocket to avoid another sack. He was sacked 5 times, including twice on the final desperation drive. His 202 yards passing wasn't enough to beat the expansion Texans. On 3rd and 8 from the Texans 21, Brunell was flagged for a delay of game penalty backing them up to 3rd and 13. Not what you'd expect from a veteran. They had to settle for a field goal on the drive.

RB - Fred Taylor had 84 yards rushing but it took 25 carries for him to get that. He added 22 yards on 3 receptions. The Texan's defense stayed home a lot instead of over pursuing Taylor, making it hard for his cutbacks to be effective. The cruel joke continues for Fred Taylor owners as he's healthy and running well but still getting pulled at the goalline for Stacey Mack who vultured another TD.

Stacey Mack was much more effective when he carried the ball. 6 for 38 yard and a touchdown isn't all that bad after seeing what Taylor's average was. But Mack is a different type of runner and the Texan's were geared for stopping Taylor's style.

WR - Jimmy Smith had Jacksonville's only receiving touchdown. 4 catches for 80 yards is a nice average per reception. Brunell looked to Smith quite often when he needed the completion.

Bobby Shaw had a good game on punt return duty but also had 4 catches for 36 yards. Shaw made a lot of his catches in the first half of the game to keep key drives alive. Shaw almost caught the last pass of the game in the end zone but Marcus Coleman tipped the Hail Mary pass at the last second.

Patrick Johnson did not play in the game.

TE - Pete Mitchell had 3 catches for 33 yards.

Kyle Brady had 31 yards on 2 catches.

K - Newly acquired Tim Seder may find himself unemployed once again. He missed 2 field goals in the game. Either one of them would have been enough to win the game. One was from 50 which can be excused but the other miss was from 35. He did make a 34 yard kick, finishing 1/3.

Jacksonville Run Defense - The Run defense did a great job against the Texans dual RB threat. They allowed 81 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Jacksonville Pass Defense - Applied good pressure on Carr and shut down his favorite target in Bradford. They let his best friend, Miller make plays downfield that eventually cost them the game. They did have 4 sacks on Carr and may have caused Carr to fumble the snap twice, recovering one of them.

One of the key plays for the Jaguar's was the blocked punt. Great special teams play pinned the Texans inside their 5 yard line. With a defensive stand the Texans were forced to punt. And great special teams play blocked the punt in the endzone. The ball rolled out of the side of the endzone resulting in a safety.
