NY Giants 3 at Philadelphia 17

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

New York Giants:

QB Kerry Collins had an interesting game. Nice yardage but that was about it. He completed 20 passes for 254 yards to 8 different receivers against Philadelphia's stingy defense. Over 80 of those yards were thrown in New York's final drive, when the game was already out of hand. He didn't throw a single touchdown or interception, but did fumble the ball twice. He recovered both fumbles. He looked hesitant through out the game.

Jeremy Shockey was Collins favorite target catching 6 balls for 69 yards. After making comments about Philadelphia's secondary, calling them lucky, earlier in the week, he played like he was trying to back up his own words. Shockey was penalized 15 yards for taunting after making a 21- yard catch. He was hit hard every time he touched the ball. He played well considering that he played with a hurt toe.

The Giants run defense was terrible. They allowed both McNabb (111) and Staley (126) to rush for over 100 yards apiece.

Ike Hilliard left the game with a dislocated shoulder on a late hit by Brian Dawkins.

Philadelphia Eagles:

Duce Staley gained over 100 yards (126) on the ground for the second week in a row. He ran over New York's defense just like he did to Tampa Bay last week. He gained yardage in huge chunks over and over again and ate tons of clock. Andy Reid is gaining confidence in Staley and will continue to use him until it stops working. He added 37 yards in the air. He's a workhorse.

Donovan McNabb became the 2nd quarterback to rush for 2 100-yard games in a single season in 30 years. And it's only week eight. New York's secondary blanketed Philadelphia's receivers all game. So McNabb beat them with his feet. Some runs were designed others were just stepping up into the pocket and finding huge lanes. He finished the Giants with a 40-yard touchdown run. It was the only touchdown of the game. He added 137 yards in the air on 14 completions. James Thrash was the recipient of half of them.

This game went into the 4th quarter 9-3. It was reminiscent of last year's battle in which Philadelphia came storming back in the 4th quarter. All game you kept wondering if it was payback time. The Eagles let the Giants stay in it way too long. It is a credit to the stingy Philadelphia defense, for never letting the Giants back into the game or giving up any huge plays.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

New York Giants

QB: Kerry Collins played the most average game possible. No touchdowns or interceptions were thrown. He connected with 8 receivers for 251 yards. About 80 of those yards were during the final drive when the Giants were trying to make the score respectable. His biggest play of the game was a 12-yard pass to rookie Charles Stackhouse that went to Philadelphia's 1-yard line. Stackhouse fumbled into the end zone for an Eagle's touchback. Collins fumbled twice. He recovered one of them, while the other fumble went out of bounds. Both plays were recorded as sacks.

RB: Tiki Barber played a strong game against a tough run defense. He gathered 79 yards on the ground. He broke a 31-yard gain after Shockey's taunting penalty. Barber caught 5 passes for 92 yards. 60 of those yards were in the final drive, when the game was already over. He was also the target of the final pass into the end zone. It was knocked away by Al Harris.

Ron Dayne ran 4 times for 11 yards and caught 1 pass for 2 yards. It was a typical Dayne day.

WR: Amani Toomer had trouble getting open all game. He caught 2 balls for 16 yards. That would make two ineffective weeks in a row.

Ike Hilliard left the game with a dislocated shoulder on a late hit by Brian Dawkins early in the 3rd quarter. He hadn't provided any offense up to that point.

TE: Jeremy Shockey was Collins favorite target catching 6 balls for 69 yards. After making comments about Philadelphia's secondary earlier in the week, calling them lucky, he played like he was trying to back up his own words. Shockey was penalized 15 yards for taunting after making a 21- yard catch. He was hit hard every time he touched the ball. He showed toughness playing through the pain of an injured toe. Early in the game, sideline reporter Melissa Stark reported that Shockey didn't know how long he'd be able to tolerate the pain.

New York Pass Defense - They were amazing. McNabb only threw for 137 yards, and had to create what he did get. They only let up 2 big plays. A 29 yard pass to Staley and a 32 yard reception to Thrash. The Thrash play helped set up McNabb's touchdown run.

New York Rush Defense - They allowed 299 yards on the ground and 1 touchdown. Hamilton's injury is a huge blow.

New York Special Teams - Matt Bryant connected for a 26-yard field goal on his only attempt. He provided the only score for the Giants

Philadelphia Eagles

QB: Donovan McNabb showed why he is the premiere rushing quarterback. He became the 2nd quarterback to rush for 2 100-yard games in a single season in 30 years. New York's secondary blanketed Philadelphia's receivers all game. So McNabb beat them with his feet. Some runs were designed others were just moving up into the pocket and finding huge lanes. He finished the Giants with a 40-yard touchdown run. It was the only touchdown of the game. He added 137 yards in the air on 14 completions. James Thrash was the recipient of half of them. He attempted a few long passes but was constantly overthrowing his receivers.

RB: Duce Staley continued where he left off last week. He is becoming a workhorse back, rushing for huge gains. He rushed 24 times for 126 yards. He caught 2 passes for 37 yards. He had a nice 24-yard run on a fake end around to James Thrash. There is no RBBC in Philadelphia. Reid trusts Staley and is going to continue to use him all season long.

Dorsey Levens made the best of his 5 carries, by gaining 33 yards. He broke a 24-yard run up the middle in the 2nd quarter.

Brian Westbrook gained 29 yards on 3 carries. Not too shabby for Philadelphia's 3rd option.

WR: Todd Pinkston caught 3 passes for 20 yards. McNabb overthrew him and the rest of the receivers a couple of times.

James Thrash grabbed 7 passes for 69 yards. He was the target of the very first pass of the game, a long throw downfield. If McNabb would have been a bit more accurate it may have resulted in a touchdown.

Antonio Freeman saw limited action today. He was getting over the flu. He caught 1 pass for 5 yards. It was a huge third down play that kept the Eagles final scoring drive alive.

TE: Chad Lewis has fazed out of the game the last 2 weeks. The only pass he caught was a bullet on a 2-point conversion.

Philadelphia Pass Defense - They held the Giants to no touchdowns. They played a strong physical game, and really knocked the Giants around. This is the 2nd game in a row that they have not allowed an offensive touchdown. Blaine Bishop caused the Stackhouse fumble that went out of bounds in the end zone, for an Eagle touchback

Philadelphia Rush Defense - They held the Giants to 103 total rushing yards. Tiki Barber had a better day against the Eagles than most running backs have this season.

Philadelphia Special Teams - David Akers went 3-4 on field goal attempts (27, 36, 35 yards). His miss, a 50-yard try, was the first of his season. Brian Mitchell went over 21,000 combined yards after his opening kick-off return.
