WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Oakland Raiders:

WR Tim Brown was very active today and Rich Gannon looked his way constantly throughout the game as the Raiders took advantage of a mismatch. He finished with 13 catches for 144 yards but couldn't get in the end zone. As a result of Brown's effectiveness, Jerry Rice and Jerry Porter were limited in their numbers. Rice uncharacteristically had a huge fumble in the late fourth quarter with the Raiders down 3 points with 4:39 left in the game.

RB Charlie Garner looked good running the ball and his hamstring didn't appear to give him any problems. His numbers weren't what one would hope against the Chiefs, but he looked fine running the ball and continued to show his superb athleticism. It's worth noting that Zack Crockett did get a carry on the goal line early in the game when he replaced Garner.

Gannon was efficient on the day and found Brown and Garner on a number of short passes. Surprisingly, Gannon couldn't get the Raiders in the end zone except for once. The Chiefs defense played surprisingly well though they couldn't get to Gannon to sack him.

Sebastian Janikowski had a 44-yard field goal blocked on the first drive of the game extended his miss streak to four straight. It was a low kick. His second field goal was good from 32 yards.

Kansas City Chiefs:

Defensive coordinator Greg Robinson's unit entered the game ranked last in the NFL. Holding Oakland to 10 points is outstanding. The defense allowed the Raiders to move the ball on short to medium pass patterns all day, but simply didn't allow the Raiders to score. It was this unit's best outing on the year. LB Marcus Patten had a big interception in the fourth quarter and almost had another early in the game.

Priest Holmes continued to be the workhorse for the Chiefs, and looked good running in the poor field conditions. His screen plays were particularly effective in this game. Holmes had a touchdown in the first quarter called back because of a penalty. The Chiefs continue to feed Holmes the ball all game long and he continues to look great getting it.

Morton Andersen went 2-2 on the day, including a 46-yard field goal. His hamstring does not appear to be a problem and this game was a good indication as it was played in cold weather.

It was a mixed bag for Trent Green on the day, as he made some nice throws but also threw two bad interceptions deep in the Raiders red zone. You get the sense from watching this game that he would be completely lost without Holmes in the backfield. 93 of Green's 208 total passing yards went to Holmes.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Oakland Raiders

QB: Rich Gannon was accurate on early in the game on his short passes, primarily to Tim Brown. He led the Raiders to what should have been two scoring drives early in the game, but a field goal was blocked on the first attempt. Gannon's play fake was effective on the second and led to a Doug Jolley touchdown. Gannon continued his efficient passing throughout the first half but couldn't put more points on the board. Gannon had a nice scramble in the second half making the most of a pressing pass rush by the Chiefs.

WR: Jerry Rice ran a reverse in the first quarter for a nice gain. Rice wasn't busy early on as Tim Brown caught seven balls in the first half. Rice was targeted on a deep route late in the second quarter but wasn't really open. Rice uncharacteristically had a huge fumble in the late fourth quarter with the Raiders down 3 points with 4:39 left in the game.

Tim Brown caught passes on the first three plays of the game as the Raiders worked the short routes under the poor field conditions. He saw a lot of action early in the game and also returned punts as Phillip Buchanon is out. Brown was open deep in the second quarter for a possible touchdown, but Gannon missed him as he was under pressure. He finished the first half with 7 receptions and Gannon continued to look his way in the second half. The Raiders must have liked Brown's matchup against the Chiefs' secondary as Brown continued to rack up receptions and yards. He finished with 13 catches for 144 yards but couldn't get in the end zone.

Jerry Porter ran a reverse in the second quarter that went nowhere. He had a nice sideline catch in the second quarter where he made Chief defenders miss the tackle and took it up the sidelines for a 24-yard gain. Overall, he was quiet early in the game and finished the first half with only the one catch. He had 4 catches for 63 yards on the day.

RB: Charlie Garner made a nice spin move in the first quarter showing his athleticism that's become the norm this year. He continued to show the same burst he has all year, and his hamstring didn't seem to affect him early in the game. He only had 7 runs in the first half, but looked good running the ball. Garner's spin move is really a classic and he continued to use it in the second half. He only carried the ball 3 more times in the second half but was very involved in the passing game. Garner looked fine and his small output is probably just the result of the Raiders game plan to throw the ball against the Chiefs.

Zack Crockett got an early carry on the goal line and was used in the game when the Raiders were on the goal line.

TE: Roland Williams had a first quarter drop that was catchable. Williams was quiet on the day and finished with only 1 catch for 6 yards. He was targeted in the end zone in the third quarter but was overthrown.

Rookie Doug Jolley caught the Raiders only touchdown pass on a nice Gannon play fake.

K: Sebastian Janikowski had a 44-yard field goal blocked on the first drive of the game extended his miss streak to four straight. It was a low kick so he has to take some if not most of the blame. His second field goal was good from 32 yards.

Raiders Pass Defense: The Raiders sacked Trent Green on a 3rd and goal that pushed the Chiefs back, but Anderson made the 46-yard attempt. DE Trace Armstrong was all over Green on a Chiefs' 3rd and goal play, resulting in a Andersen field goal. The Raiders took back to back penalties late in the game really damaging a chance for a come back. LB Bill Romanowski led the unit with 7 tackles and an interception.

Raiders Rush Defense: The Raiders did a good job stopping Priest Holmes from hurting them too badly early in the game. Still, he's tough to stop and he was able to get his yards and move the ball. Though the Raiders only allowed 6 points in the first half, it could have been worse as the Chiefs moved the ball. In the second half, Holmes racked up the yards and carried Raider defenders on his back while doing it.

Kansas City Chiefs

QB: Trent Green scrambled for a first down on the Chiefs first series. It was a mixed bag early for Green. He moved the ball well on the first drive, but they stalled on his second drive. The Chiefs continued to move the ball in the first half but couldn't complete a drive. On a drive right before halftime, Green made another long scramble that was impressive, but threw an interception on the next play on the Raiders 3-yard line. Green opened up the second half with another interception in the Raiders' territory. Another bad pass. Green made some good passes on the day, but you get the feeling he'd be lost without Priest Holmes in the backfield. 93 of Green's 208 total passing yards came on screen passes to Holmes. Green's sole touchdown pass came with under 2 minutes left in the game to Tony Richardson.

WR: Johnny Morton dropped a pass at the end of the first pass that he should have caught. It would have been a nice gain. He didn't have a catch in the game, but did get a call on a reverse in the late fourth quarter.

Eddie Kennison made two catches in the red zone on the first drive, both for first downs. He was shut out for the remainder of the half. He finished the day with three catches but was still the top KC wideout.

Mark Boerigter had a (questionable) chop block penalty called in the first quarter that negated a Priest Holmes touchdown run. He caught his first pass in the second quarter for a nice gain, but it was his only catch in the half.

Dante Hall continued to return kicks but was not involved in the passing game.

RB: Priest Holmes continued to be the workhorse for the Chiefs, and looked good running in the poor field conditions. Holmes had a touchdown in the first quarter called back because of a questionable chop block by WR Boerigter. He carried a bunch of Raiders into the end zone on the play. He continued his strong play throughout the first half, and had a couple of nice screen plays that were very effective. The second half was more of the same, and Holmes had another great screen play go for 49 yards. Holmes started carrying the Chiefs in the second half, and carried Raider defenders on his back as he racked up yards. The Chiefs continue to feed Holmes the ball all game long and he continues to look great getting it.

TE: Tony Gonzalez caught a 24-yard pass in the second quarter when he beat Anthony Dorsett. He was targeted in the end zone later on the drive. Gonzalez started to get involved in the passing game in the second quarter and finished the half with over 50 yards. He was quiet in the second half.

K: Morten Andersen made a nice 46-yard field goal in the first quarter and added another short field goal in the second quarter. His hamstring does not appear to be a problem.

Chiefs Pass Defense: Defensive coordinator Greg Robinson's unit entered the game ranked last in the NFL. Holding this team to 10 points is outstanding. LB Marcus Patten almost had an interception in the end zone in the late first quarter and did get a big interception in the fourth quarter to stall a Raiders drive. Altogether, the defense allowed the Raiders to move the ball on short to medium pass patterns all day, but simply didn't allow the Raiders to score. It was this unit's best outing on the year.

Chiefs Rush Defense: The Chiefs held the speedy Charlie Garner to only 31 yards in the first half as he only ran the ball 7 times. In the second half, Garner only carried the ball 3 times as Oakland's game plan was the throw the ball against the Chiefs. Ray Crockett led the unit with 8 solo tackles.
