New England 38 at Buffalo 7

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

New England Patriots:

New England is back. Their defense stopped a powerful Buffalo offense and the New England offense was awesome. This is just the kind of game that may shake the team out of their funk.

This is the Tom Brady we've come to expect this season. Brady was poised, accurate, and nearly perfect. The offensive game plan was well-planned, and Brady came through with a big win for New England.

Antowain Smith was a one-man wrecking crew Sunday. Smith owners finally got a great performance out of their RB. Smith killed Buffalo on the ground and in the air.

New England mixed things up throwing in a scheme showing 0 or 1 true linemen - if you count Willie McGinest as a lineman - that had four linebackers and seven D backs late in the game. Wow.

Buffalo Bills:

Drew Bledsoe had a very good day passing the ball. Besides one interception, Bledsoe played very well under constant pressure from New England's blitzing defense.

It's always nice when your fantasy players have a good output despite a lopsided loss. Though the Bills' WRs didn't post huge numbers, they ran crisp routes. The Bills' WRs came to play.

The Buffalo defense was horrible. Brady torched the Bills' D all day. The run D was easily as bad as the Bills' pass defense. The Bills had no answer for Antowain Smith. Any progress the Bills' defense made in the Miami victory is now long-forgotten.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

New England Patriots

QB: This is the Tom Brady we've come to expect this season. Brady was poised, accurate, and nearly perfect. The offensive game plan was well-planned, and Brady came through with a big win for New England. Brady's numbers speak for his fine performance: 23 for 27, 310 yards, and four TDs. The Patriots' short passing game was efficient - especially on the many screen plays. It's hard to beat New England when Brady plays this well.

WR: The WRs for New England looked great. David Patten led all receivers with six catches for 88 yards. The Bills could not stop Patten and he was open often.

Troy Brown's numbers were less spectacular with three catches for 38 yards. Though the New England WRs didn't post huge numbers, they got open when Brady needed them.

RB: Antowain Smith was a one-man wrecking crew Sunday. Smith owners finally got a great performance out of their RB. Smith killed Buffalo on the ground and in the air. Smith smashed through Buffalo's front seven all day with 29 carries for 111 yards and a TD. Smith also hurt Buffalo in the passing game and caught five balls for 31 yards and two TDs.

Of Note - Tom Brady discussed using Antowain Smith out of the backfield as a receiver. Brady alluded to him being better suited toward running than receiving, pretty faint praise for his receiving skills. In other words, Antowain got more passes this game on a team that used a lot of screen passes, but we're not sure you can count on it continuing.

Kevin Faulk also contributed nicely with 72 combined yards and a receiving TD.

TE: More evidence that no single New England TE is worth owning. Enter Daniel Graham. Graham had three catches for 68 yards. Christian Fauria and Cam Cleeland were unspectacular, though Fauria did catch a short TD.

Pass Defense: This unit did allow a huge chunk of yards (302), but the Patriots always seemed to find a way to pressure Bledsoe. For most of the day, the Patriots' defense stiffened in the red zone.

New England mixed things up throwing in a scheme showing 0 or 1 true linemen - if you count Willie McGinest as a lineman - that had four linebackers and seven D backs late in the game. Wow.

Rush Defense: This phase of the game was rock-solid for New England. Buffalo only rushed for 65 yards total, and the New England front seven held Travis Henry in check all day.

Buffalo Bills

QB: Considering that Buffalo only scored seven points, Drew Bledsoe had a very good day passing the ball. Besides one interception, Bledsoe played very well under constant pressure from New England's blitzing defense. Bledsoe racked up another big yardage day, finishing with 28 for 45, 302 yards and one TD.

WRs: It's always nice when your fantasy players have a good output despite a lopsided loss. Peerless Price was the best Bills WR with nine catches for 98 yards and one TD. Eric Moulds also played decently with five catches for 68 yards. Though the Bills' WRs didn't post huge numbers, they ran crisp routes. The Bills' WRs came to play.

RBs: While the Bills' WRs played pretty well, the Bills' RB crew struggled. Travis Henry had a tough time earning his yards Sunday. Henry needs some space to be successful, and the Patriots' front seven gave Henry nowhere to go all day. Henry finished with only 65 total yards rushing and receiving with no TDs. Larry Centers contributed with 66 total yards.

TE: This unit barely contributed anything at all. Dave Moore had only one catch and Jay Riemersma had zero catches. Clearly, no one on the Bills' TE crew is worthy of a fantasy roster slot.

Pass Defense: Horrible. Just horrible. This unit wasn't helped by the Buffalo offense, but that's no excuse. Brady torched the Bills' D all day.

Rush Defense: Easily as bad as the Bills' pass defense. The Bills had no answer for Antowain Smith.
