Washington 14 at Seattle 3

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Washington Redskins:

With Stephen Davis out with a knee injury, Kenny Watson got the start. Watson had a great game, rushing 23 times for 110 yards. Ladell Betts spelled Watson. He rushed for 37 yards on 5 carries.

Shane Matthews only had 114 yards today, but with the Redskins taking an early 14-3 lead, Steve Spurrier got conservative and used Watson to run the ball. He threw touchdown passes to Darnerien McCants (11 yards) and Rod Gardner (19 yards).

The Redskins defense played excellent today. They didn't allow Hasselbeck to complete many long passes, or Alexander to run for any big gains. They were especially tough when the Seahawks got into the redzone.

Seattle Seahawks:

Koren Robinson was the top receiver today with Darrell Jackson out. Robinson caught eight passes for a total of 100 yards. He wasn't Hasselbeck's only target, however. Tight end Itula Mili caught six passes for 71 yards. Shaun Alexander caught eight passes for 48 yards.

Shaun Alexander wasn't used much in the running game because the Seahawks fell behind early.

The Seattle Run defense continues to be one of the worst in the league, allowing the Redskins to rush for 146 yards.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Washington Redskins

QB: Shane Matthews was far from spectacular, throwing for only 114 yards. However, he had two touchdown passes to Darnerien McCants and Rod Gardner. With the lead, the Redskins started to play conservatively and run the ball. Matthews didn't look sharp at times, overthrowing his intended receiver, or throwing the ball into traffic. He had an interception where he threw the ball right to DE Antonio Cochran.

RB: Kenny Watson started in place of the injured Stephen Davis and had a great game. He rushed for 110 yards on 23 carries. Watson had a very nice 23 yard run in the first quarter. Watson also caught four passes for 42 yards.

Ladell Betts also got some time at running back. He ran for 37 yards on five carries.

WR: Rod Gardner was the leading receiver for the Redskins today. He had four catches for 47 yards, including a 19 yard touchdown reception. On his touchdown, he took a simple screen pass and turned it into a touchdown.

Derrius Thompson started at receiver, but didn't have any catches.

Darnerien McCants was the only other receiver for the Redskins to have a catch. He had an 11 yard touchdown reception.

TE: No tight end for the Redskins had any receptions today.

Rush defense: The Redskins defense continues to come together. They held Shaun Alexander to 67 yards. They didn't let him break any long runs.

Pass defense: Bruce Smith had two key sacks for the Redskins that might have turned around the game. Fred Smoot had a great game with eight tackles. Hasselbeck wouldn't even look to the side that Champ Bailey was covering, as he was covering his man so good. They solidified in the Redzone, allowing only one field goal.

Seattle Seahawks

QB: Matt Hasselbeck was ineffective today. He didn't look sharp at all. He had trouble finding any open receivers to throw to. Hasselbeck started off very shaky, throwing two passes on the first drive that were very close to being picked off. He completed 28 passes for 264 yards, but no touchdowns. Is the Jeff George Watch on?

RB: Shaun Alexander was used effectively as a receiver out of the backfield today. He had 67 yards on 19 carries. Alexander was the target of many screen passes. He had eight catches for 48 yards. He took a short screen pass 19 yards in the first quarter. He looked fine and ran hard, he was just bottled up by a very good Redskin defense. Still, with this team struggling, you have to wonder about his opportunities.

WR: Koren Robinson was Hasselbeck's top target today. He had eight catches for 100 yards. That's a solid day against corners Champ Bailey and Fred Smoot.

With Darrell Jackson out this week, Bobby Engram started opposite of Robinson at receiver. He had only one catch for 11 yards.

TE: Itula Mili was one of Hasselbeck's favorite receivers with six receptions for 71 yards.

Pass defense: The Seahawks did a good job of containing Matthews, but their run defense continues to hurt them.

Run defense: The Seattle Run defense continues to be one of the worse in the league, allowing the Redskins to rush for 146 yards.
