Quarterbacks
Starter - Brett Favre
Backups - Doug Pederson, Craig Nall

Starting Quarterback: What can you say about the great Brett Favre. He has had an amazing 157 starts, and ten straight seasons of over 3000 passing yards. He gets the job done every year despite having to get used to new receivers many times over his career. Once again, there is a changing of the guard at the receiver position in Green Bay as Terry Glenn was brought in to be the go to receiver in the offense. Favre brings out the best in the players surrounding him and there is no reason to believe he will struggle this season. He is getting older but at 32 years old, he still has many solid years left in him. We have him at a dependable eighth overall and he should be able to avoid the injury bug once again in 2002.

Backup Quarterback(s): Doug Pederson is a decent backup for the Packers but the team would suffer a massive downgrade if something happens to Favre and they have to rely on him. Pederson doesn't have a great deal of skill and is best suited to holding the clipboard on the sideline. He certainly doesn't excite you like past Packer backup quarterbacks like Mark Brunell and Aaron Brooks. He'd probably do all right if he was called into duty but wouldn't put up Favre-like numbers. Craig Nall is even further down the pecking list and there is no reason to have him on your draft list no matter what your league rules are.

Running Backs
Starter - Ahman Green
Backups - Rondell Mealey, Tony Fisher, Herbert Goodman

Starting Running Back: Ahman Green is explosive, powerful and a threat to score from anywhere on the football field. He had three touchdown runs of more than sixty yards, which is very impressive. He is a punishing, yet quick running back that is as good in the passing attack as he is on the ground. We have him rushing for over 1400 yards and he'll add at least 500 via the passing game. Mark him in for a dozen touchdowns and you have the third best running back in fantasy football and very close to being the second best. He will get 20 + carries per game on average in 2002 and should continue his stellar play of the past two seasons. The only concern in regards to Green is his penchant for fumbling the ball. He will need to get better in that aspect.

Backup Running Back(s): There is a heck of a battle in Green Bay for the backup running back position. The winner will have very little fantasy value anyways unless Green suffers a bad injury. At this time, Mealey is leading the way but has little fantasy worth at this time and could be passed in the depth chart by either Fisher or Goodman. None of the three are first tier running backs even if they get the opportunity but Mealey seems to have the best chance to be a solid pro.

Fullback(s): William Henderson: William Henderson is one of the finest fullbacks in the game. He is a punishing blocker who is very good when it comes to opening up holes for Green to run through. He is also in the top twenty all-time for receptions on the Packers. Now that is impressive.

Wide Receivers / Tight Ends
Starters - Terry Glenn, Donald Driver
Backups - Robert Ferguson, Javon Walker [r], Charles Lee

Starting Receiver(s): Receivers always seem to step up when they play with Favre. The latest Star receiver to land in Green Bay is often troubled, yet talented Terry Glenn who comes over from New England. Glenn had his moments of glory in New England but also had many clashes that had his teammates and coaches upset with him. Favre is a great steadying influence on Glenn and will do everything in his power to keep him both healthy and young. At the other starting position, it was supposed to be second year receiver, Robert Ferguson that was to step up his game and become a legitimate receiver in the NFL. However his progress ground to a halt the past couple of week and Donald Driver's leapt ahead of him into the # 2 role. Driver has more experience and has added both size and speed to his game. He was a great sleeper pick a week or two ago but many owners have him penciled into their drafts now than there were a few weeks ago

Backup Receiver(s): The battle is going to be entertaining all year in Green Bay for the privilege to catch Favre's throws. The race between Donald Driver, Robert Ferguson, Javon Walker and even Charles Lee will be golden. Robert Ferguson and Javon Walker have loads of talent and only need some experience to become solid receivers. All four will likely receive some playing time during the season. We have all three with only nine fantasy points separating them with Donald Driver having the most and Javon Walker only a few points back.

Tight End(s): Bubba Franks, David Martin, Tyrone Davis The Packers are loaded when it comes to the tight end position. All three players have plenty of receiving skills and all three will likely see some playing time in 2002. We especially like the potential of Franks this year who was awesome in the red-zone last year. He should catch at least eight touchdowns again in 2002. David Martin will get some opportunities and he could be golden if something happens to Franks. There I some who believe that Martin is the better receiver and only needs an opportunity to shine. Martin has marginal worth as a backup tight end for a fantasy team in a large league and he has a ton of potential if something should happen to Franks. Tyrone Davis is buried on the depth chart and has been battling weight issues. He has no fantasy value so don't even consider him come draft day.

Place Kicker
Ryan Longwell: He's a solid kicker who will have a productive season. It is almost impossible to predict which kickers will get the most opportunities this season but the Packers are likely to move the ball down the field very well this year which should open up chances for him. He has proven he can kick in the elements and we have him ranked # 5 in our Footballguys.com projections.

Defense
The Packers have a top-ten fantasy defense. They have strength in all positions led by Joe Johnson, Vonnie Holliday, Nate Wayne, Darren Sharper and Mike McKenzie. Tyrone Williams was erratic last year and needs to cut down on the big plays against him. The defense has speed, solid tackling and lots of experience and will have another solid season. The strength of the defense is the defensive line with lots of depth and talent to rotate in and out of the game. Pass rush specialist, Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila had 13.5 sacks in 2001 and will be gunning for more this year. Behemoth defensive nose tackle, Gilbert Brown is there for the sole purpose of plugging up the holes to run through up the middle. At 340+ pounds, he is well suited for that role.

Coaching
Mike Sherman had a tough act to follow when he took over for Mike Holmgren. He has done a super job in keeping the Packers competitive despite the changes to the team. He has the team in a position to go far into the playoffs and deserves a lot of praise for their 12-4 record of a year ago. He did a great job and should do so again this year.

Intangibles
Favre wants to get back to the Championship game in a huge way and his motivation and focus is a big plus to the team. He realizes that time isn't on his side anymore and two titles look so much nicer on a Hall of Fame resume than one (like he'll have to worry about his entry to the Hall).
