The Best Fantasy Quarterback

Trivia question: over the last four years, which of the top mobile QBs has thrown the most TDs, ran for the most yards, rushed for the most TDs, and thrown for the most yardage? If you said Donovan McNabb, you'd be wrong. The answer is Daunte Culpepper.

Most fantasy draft boards have Daunte Culpepper ranked third behind Michael Vick and Donovan McNabb. We all know that Vick and McNabb are great talents. However, if you want to win your fantasy league, the stats say you should draft Culpepper first.

The Michael Vick hype machine is a powerful force, understandably. After all, Vick is an athlete of staggering talent. Vick's game-winning TD against the Vikings last year was a thing of beauty. Vick actually out-rushed Culpepper in 2002. The catch, though, is that The Falcons want Vick to become a better pocket passer. This will cut down on Vick's rushing stats. Vick supporters cite the Vikings' average WR corps as evidence that Culpepper is the lesser fantasy QB. Well, Randy Moss is twice the WR Peerless Price is, and after those two, neither team has an advantage. (Editor's Note: This was written prior to Vick's broken fibula this past weekend.)

Like Vick, Donovan McNabb can dominate a game single-handedly. McNabb has been one of the best mobile QBs the NFL has ever seen. McNabb has slightly outperformed Culpepper in rushing yards per game since 1999. But in the all-important category of rushing TDs, Culpepper wins by a mile - outscoring McNabb 22 to 14. That rushing TD stat is even more amazing considering that Culpepper scored those 22 rushing TDs while playing in 10 fewer games than McNabb.

Culpepper detractors point to his turnovers as a negative. That's definitely a factor in leagues that penalize fantasy players for fumbles and interceptions. Culpepper's worst turnover year was in 2002. Culpepper had to contend with the "Randy Ratio" - where he developed the bad habit of locking onto Moss. Additionally, Minnesota's injury problems left Culpepper with few offensive weapons. Now that coach Mike Tice has revamped his offense to emphasize the running game, we should see another great year for Culpepper. Minnesota's massive offensive line will surely show improvement, and a healthier receiver corps will surely improve Culpepper's turnover ratio.

Finally, consider this: in any full 16 game season for these three players, Vick and McNabb have NEVER outperformed Culpepper. Vick and McNabb have never scored as many TDs as Culpepper in a complete season, and neither QB has ever thrown and rushed for more combined yards than Culpepper.
