Chris Smith’s Thoughts:    

Usually I have a strong opinion on every player in the NFL.  However there are times where I am on a fence about a particular player and that's true with Weinke.  I look at the Panthers and see some reasons why he could be a decent # 2 quarterback for a fantasy team.  The receiving core isn't awful led by Muhsin Muhammad and there is also a good tight end to throw the ball to in Wesley Walls.  Also the team has seriously updated the rushing attack with Lamar Smith teaming up with rookie DeShaun Foster to give the team one heck of a one-two punch.

Weinke was off to a good start as a rookie last year.  Thru the first five games, he was on pace to throw for over 3600 passing yards with an excellent 60.4 % completion percentage.  Also he had thrown only one less touchdown than interception to that point and was on a one touchdown per game clip.  However over the final eleven games, the wheels fell off and he only completed 51.2 % of his passes with only 6 touchdown passes during that stretch.

The encouraging news on Weinke is that he did throw a ton of passes last year and got in some valuable experience.  That should only help him this year to become a better passer.  He had better improve in a hurry though because he is already 30 years of age and the Panthers brass are not going to wait a long time to make the decision on him.  If he wants to be an NFL starter for the next several years, he will need to improve immediately..
