Ultimate Recap - Week 13

Essential News

Quarterbacks

QB Jeff Blake (Bal) will start for the Ravens this week. Chris Redman is improving and could be available next week.

QB Rodney Peete (Car) returned to practice on Friday and will start for the Panthers.

QB Jim Miller will start, but is limited with tendonitis. Chris Chandler is out this week so Henry Burris will be the backup.

QB Steve Beuerlein (Den) will start in place of Brian Griese this week. HC Mike Shanahan felt that Brian was favoring his sprained left knee and opted to start the healthy Steve Beuerlein one more week. Brian Griese is expected to return as the starter next week.

QB David Carr (Hou) practiced this week with a heavily taped ankle. He will start as expected.

QB Jay Fiedler (Mia) practiced on Thursday and is on schedule to return as the starter next week. He could even be the #2 QB this week behind Ray Lucas who will start one more week.

QB Kerry Collins (NYG) had back spasms earlier in the week, but is fine now and will start as expected.

QB Koy Detmer (Phi) is out for 2-5 weeks after dislocating his elbow. He will be replaced by AJ Feely who will be backed up by Tim Hasselbeck. QB Donovan McNabb is out but could return for the final regular season game.

QB Kordell Stewart (Pit) took the majority of the snaps with the first unit this week and looks to be the starter this week. QB Tommy Maddox was cleared by the team doctors and did get in a few reps with the first unit. HC Bill Cowher has not named a starter, but ESPN's John Clayton reports that Kordell Stewart will start this week.

QB Kurt Warner (StL) practiced well this week despite a sore throwing hand. He remains the starter for the Rams.

QB Shaun King (TB) has been promoted to QB #2 behind Brad Johnson. Rob Johnson was demoted to #3. QB Brad Johnson remains the starter for the Bucs.

QB Steve McNair (Ten) sat out the majority of Friday's practice with extremely sore ribs. He has been unable to practice all week. He remains a game-time decision and is considered very questionable. He could be scratched. Neil O'Donnell would start in his place should he not be able to play.

QB Danny Weurffel (Was) has been named the starter for Week 14.

Running Backs

RB Thomas Jones (Ari) is gone for the season after being placed on IR. Marcel Shipp is the starting RB for the team.

The Carolina Panthers have placed Lamar Smith on paid leave for the rest of the season following his arrest while driving while intoxicated. He will not play football for the rest of this year. The team looks to use a RBBC approach this week with Dee Brown, Rod Smart, Nick Goings and Brad Hoover all getting carries.

RB Anthony Thomas (Chi) is expected to lose more touches to Leon Johnson. In last week's game against Detroit, Thomas sat on the bench for the last three Chicago series.

RB Jamel White (Cle) is expected to play this week in an undefined role after practicing Wednesday and Thursday. William Green will start.

RB Edgerrin James (Ind) practiced this week and will start despite appearing as questionable on the injury report with a tender ankle. HC Dungy stated that James will likely have this injury for the rest of the season.

RB Michael Bennett (Min) has a sprained ankle but is expected to play this weekend.

RB Moe Williams (Min) will not return kicks this weekend since he is still recovering from a sore foot. Tyrone Carter will take over those duties this weekend.

RB Deuce McAllister (NO) practiced with the first team this week, but will still be a game-time decision. He is not able to make hard cuts and is taking three steps (rounding the cuts) instead of pushing off hard. Since James Fenderson and Curtis Keaton would have needed reps in practice to play effectively, we believe Deuce McAllister should start on Sunday. He could be replaced though if he struggles during the game.

RB Jerome Bettis (Pit) practiced this week and will start this week.

RB Kevan Barlow (SF) is out this week and likely two more weeks. Garrison Hearst will get a larger share of carries during his absence.

RB Marshall Faulk (StL) did not practice with the team all week, but did do some individual work. HC Mike Martz commented that Faulk is getting real close to coming back. "There is a real chance that we will have Marshall back this week�definitely next week for sure." He remains a game-time decision.

RB Lamar Gordon (StL) did not practice in contact drills this week as a precaution since he suffered a concussion last week. He will play on Sunday.

Wide Receivers

WR Brian Finneran (Atl) was able to practice this week and will start as usual.

WR Brandon Stokley (Bal) is gone for the season after being placed on IR.

WR Steve Smith (Car) has been reinstated to the team after his one-week suspension for pummeling teammate Anthony Bright. He will return to the starting lineup.

WR Michael Westbrook (Cin) was released by the Bengals. He stated that he may retire. "I am just going to go home and laugh at this whole nightmare."

WR Ed McCaffrey (Den) continues to be plagued by his neck injury but will start this Sunday.

WR Corey Bradford (Hou) missed some practices but will start this weekend.

WR Patrick Johnson (Jac) returns this weekend, but Bobby Shaw will continue to start opposite of Jimmy Smith.

WR Eddie Kennison (KC) injured his hip in practice on Friday. His status will be determined at game-time. If he cannot go, Marc Boerigter will start opposite of Johnnie Morton.

WR Cris Carter (Mia) could be activated this week, but will still not likely be a factor until he returns to the starting lineup next week. James McKnight will start opposite of Chris Chambers this week.

WR Ron Dixon (NYG) practiced on Thursday and is expected to start on Sunday.

WR Curtis Conway (SD) may not be able to play on Sunday. His shoulder stinger has now developed into spasms and has been unable to practice. Reche Caldwell will start opposite of Tim Dwight should Curtis Conway not be able to go.

WR Tim Dwight practiced on Thursday and Friday and will start as expected. The team has upgraded him to probable on their injury report.

WR Koren Robinson (Sea) missed Thursday's practice with the flu. He is expected to start as usual.

WR Keyshawn Johnson (TB) has injured ribs but is expected to tough it out and start as usual this Sunday.

WR Joe Jurevicius (TB) missed practice on Thursday with a sore leg. He is expected to play on Sunday with the pain.

WR Kevin Dyson (Ten) will miss a month (or maybe all season) with his hamstring injury.

Tight Ends

TE John Davis (Chi) has not been able to practice and is expected to be inactive for Sunday's game. The team downgraded John to doubtful on their injury report.

TE Shannon Sharpe (Den) continues to make progress, but is not a lock to play this week. He remains a game-time decision.

TE Eric Johnson (SF) practiced this week and is expected to start after a long absence.

Place Kickers

PK Tim Seder (Jac) was released. The team signed Richie Cunningham to handle the PK duties.

PK Jose Cortez (SF) was released. Jeff Chandler is now the starting kicker for the 49ers.
