I believe they still have a few entries left, but they are going fast. So if you want to play you will need to sign up soon. and now I will turn this over to Greg Kellogg for tonight's news. David Dodds /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 3. Green Agrees to 5-Year Deal With Browns Clipped from the article at Yahoo! Sports Running back William Green ended his five-day holdout Saturday by agreeing to terms on a five-year, $7.850 million contract with the Cleveland Browns. The first-round draft pick's deal was finalized shortly after Green's agent, Tom Condon, had initially turned down the package. Browns president Carmen Policy said the sides agreed on a seven-year deal that will be voided to five years if Green reaches some early incentives. [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] This is great news for both Brown's fans and Fantasy Owners that have already drafted William Green. One has to think this is a case of a player overriding his agent as Tom Condon reportedly turned down this same deal earlier. If so, count me as a new fan of RB William Green. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 4. Duckett MIA Clipped from the article at ajc.com It was believed that when Oakland cornerback Phillip Buchanon and Denver wide receiver Ashley Lelie -- the players drafted immediately before and after Duckett -- signed contracts Thursday, a resolution was imminent because most of the contract parameters would be "bracketed." But while Duckett's agent, Joel Segal, spoke with Falcons representatives Friday, little progress was made. Segal may wait to see the contract given to the only back drafted before Duckett. William Green was drafted No. 16 by the Browns, Duckett No. 18 by Atlanta. In other news... Keion Carpenter worked chiefly at No. 1 free safety Friday morning, with Keith Lyle working at No. 2. Then, they switched in the afternoon. They'll probably keep switching back and forth while competing for the job. [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] This is only good news for Warrick Dunn owners - the longer Duckett stays away, the longer it will take him to learn the Pro game. And Dunn, if given the opportunity, could keep Duckett on the pine most of the season (other than in short yardage situations) if he can convince the coaches he can stand up to the pounding. The FS spot in Atlanta may be one to concentrate on in IDP leagues. Atlanta figures to be spending most of their Sundays on defense after all. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 5. Cards Could be Better on OL this Season Clipped from the article at azcentral.com Starting left guard Pete Kendall generally is no fan of training camp, a distaste acquired after six of them. But he is looking forward to this morning's opening workout with the Cardinals after undergoing off-season surgery on his left foot. Joints in two of his toes, including the big toe, were fused following what initially was diagnosed as a sprain that caused him to miss the final 4 1/2 games last year. He was the team's top free agent acquisition last year. [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] Kendall was a very good blocker prior to the surgery and if he can come back at full strength it will only help the Cards running game and pass protection - but the Cards still did a reasonable job even with him missing 4.5 games last year so a comeback will only help. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 6. Jamal Lewis Passes First Test Clipped from the article at sunspot.net Running back Jamal Lewis, who is returning from a knee injury that forced him to miss all of last season, took some of his first hits since he was hurt in last year's training camp. Lewis had a few collisions with cornerback Gary Baxter, and fell to the ground several times. He blamed the falls on slippery turf and welcomed the hits. Lewis will test the knee further in Monday's first padded full contact practice. In other news... When he wasn't going head-to-head with Lewis, Baxter was tackling another challenge. The second-year defensive back is making the switch from safety to cornerback, where he is expected to start this season opposite Chris McAlister. [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] If any of the RBs coming back this season can make it, Lewis should have the best shot. He has already come back from an ACL tear in one season while at Tennessee and he was injured much earlier than Edgerrin James. This is a situation that bears close scrutiny as Lewis is going much later in drafts than James, Terrell Davis or Fred Taylor. On the IDP side, Gary Baxter may be one of those late round CBs you want to consider. Since this is his first year as a CB you can bet opposing teams will be picking on him, a sure recipe for IDP success. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 7. Bad Luck Hounds the Panthers Clipped from the article at Charlotte Observer DT Chris Terry's wife, NyQuell Jackson-Terry, told police her husband shoved her against a wall Wednesday night. Jackson-Terry also was granted a protective order barring her husband from assaulting, threatening or harassing her or the couple's two children. Terry could be subject to discipline by the team and the NFL. The use or threat of physical violence is prohibited by the league's Personal Conduct Policy. Players arrested for or charged with conduct prohibited by the policy are required to have an immediate clinical evaluation and, if directed, appropriate counseling. [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] First they lose their power, then the coaches and scouts lose a softball game to a bunch of media guys finally they get THIS news. Talk about a bad start. The major effect this will have on the team is in providing a distraction when one is really not needed. So many of these incidents end up with no real discipline being administered (after the wife withdraws her complaint) so I would not worry too much about Terry at this time. But distractions have a way of slowing the progress of a team under new leadership and that is something the Panthers cannot afford. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 8. David Terrell, Then and Now Clipped from the article at ChicagoSports.com He was fined for missing meetings, criticized harshly while being publicly embarrassed by coach Dick Jauron in front of the entire team and was so sloppy in his approach to the game that his obvious physical talents rarely could be displayed. In a West Coast passing offense, a premium is placed on timing and precise routes, with receivers where they are supposed to be when the quarterback goes through carefully sequenced reads. Terrell was rarely on time or on cue. He dropped sure touchdown passes and ran routes so poorly that quarterbacks lost confidence in his ability to get open, an ability he had taken for granted all his football life. Terrell, beginning training camp in serious competition primarily with Dez White for the No. 2 wide receiver job opposite Marty Booker, says he has matured. That maturity, he and the Bears already say, is showing on the field and off it. "Just the whole approach to playing football in the NFL," Terrell said. "It's a totally huge difference. A lot of times in college you can go out and get open by your athleticism. But in the pros it's so much more complex than that. [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] Terrell has the talent and swagger to succeed - actually to be a great receiver. But if he doesn't get his head straight he will just be another draft pick gone bad for the Bears. Early signs suggest he understands this, but watch what happens in camp before wasting a high pick on him. And remember, Marcus Robinson is still in the picture. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 9. Bengals Get to Work Clipped from the article at Cincinnati Enquirer Levi Jones signed his contract in the wee hours of Friday morning. Lamont Thompson signed his contract at breakfast time. And both rookies, the Bengals' top two draft picks, were in uniform and on the field for the 11 a.m. skills session that opened the 2002 Bengals training camp. Thompson was inserted into the starting role at free safety and spent the skills session and afternoon practice working with the No. 1 defense. [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] With both of their first round picks signed Cincinnati can now get down to the business of getting ready for the season. Jones will add to a defense that was better than anyone expected last season and should be considered a late round sleeper in IDP leagues. Jones will help solidify an improving offensive line and will mean good things for both the Bengal's rushing and passing attacks. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 10. Sign of the Times in Cleveland Clipped from the article at Yahoo! Sports First-round draft pick William Green's agent turned down the latest contract offer from the Cleveland Browns, a five-year deal worth nearly $8 million. Team spokesman Todd Stewart said agent Tom Condon rejected a deal Saturday. Stewart estimated it was worth $7.85 million. Condon did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment. The running back is the only Browns player not at training camp. [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] This is not a good sign at all. I don't see the Browns sweetening their offer much as they are already 10 percent higher than the deal the New York Jets gave wide receiver Santana Moss last summer. Moss was drafted in the same spot as Green was and the average increase this season has been four percent - making this a very fair offer. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 11. Cowboys Sign Rookie Roy Williams Clipped from the article at the Star Telegram The Cowboys received a good omen Friday when they avoided a rash of holdouts by coming to contract agreements with their top four draft picks, including safety Roy Williams (first round) and center Andre Gurode (second round), who have been projected into the starting lineup. [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] Good news for Cowboys fans and IDP owners - Roy Williams should prove to be a very good safety for your teams. Dallas is already strong on defense and Williams brings a reputation for being a great tackler and always finding himself around the ball. If you miss out on the top DBs in your draft, don't be afraid to fill the hole with Williams. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 12. Davis Feels Great Clipped from the article at denverpost.com Friday, at the end of the Denver Broncos' first session of two-a-day, training-camp practices, running back Terrell Davis said a 1,500-yard rushing season is well within his range. "Without a doubt, if I play in 16 games, 1,500 is definitely within reach. No question about it," Davis said. In other news... Davis wasn't the only Bronco feeling fine Friday. Steve Beuerlein, the 37-year-old quarterback who's battling Jarious Jackson for the backup job, had an outstanding day. He completed a long bomb to wide receiver Scottie Montgomery. More important, Beuerlein threw the ball with plenty of zip and no pain. That was in sharp contrast to last year's camp, where Beuerlein was only a part-time participant because of the pain in his surgically repaired elbow. [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] Surprising by it's absence is the lack of mention of the man who was said to have had the best spring practices -- Olandis Gary. There was mention of Davis battling Clinton Portis but no mention of Gary anywhere. Whether this means Gary is back on the trading block or not is impossible to determine but this is a situation that definitely bears watching. And if you own Griese, but don't feel very confident in him, Beuerlein might make a nice last round insurance pick. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 13. Lion's Camp Notes Clipped from the article at the Detroit Free Press Wide receiver Az-Zahir Hakim got some time off after getting muscle cramps. It appears unlikely the Lions will make an immediate move to sign free agent defensive tackle Daryl Gardener. They are well-stocked at that position and it is believed Gardener's contract demands are substantial. Cornerback Terry Fair (foot) is starting camp on the physically unable to perform list, but Mornhinweg said "all things are positive with Terry Fair at this point." [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] Nothing to worry about with Hakim - cramps are common early in any training camp. Gardener, who is reportedly fat and out of shape, AND wants a large contract, may end up on the street if he is not careful. Fair's comeback is essential if the Lions hope to contend for anything other than the basement again this year so watch this situation closely. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 14. No Holliday in Green Bay Clipped from the article at the News-Chronicle Online Holliday's agent, Neil Schwartz, has said a holdout is possible if Holliday doesn't sign or agree to a new contract by Saturday, the first practice day for veterans. Holliday has one year left on his original five-year deal, but there was an agreement that entering the final year of the contract the Packers would negotiate a new deal for Holliday. "Vonnie wanted to get this done before camp, and so did I," Sherman said. "There are conversations going on between (Packers director of player finance) Andrew Brandt and his agent." [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] If there was an agreement to renegotiate, then the Packers should have started sooner. Holdouts never help a team and Holliday is an integral part of this defense. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 15. Foreman already was the front-runner to be the starter. Aldridge opted to retire, citing wear-and-tear during his eight-year career. [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] While a 3-4 is not as conducive to producing large stats as a 4-3, the ILB positions for the Texans should be able to produce due to the amount of time they will be on the field. With Aldridge out of the picture, Foreman becomes a decent sleeper. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 16. Rhodes in Hot Water Clipped from the article at IndyStar.com The NFL is reviewing a domestic battery case involving Indianapolis Colts running back Dominic Rhodes to determine whether the second-year player is subject to a league fine or suspension. Greg Aiello, the league's vice president of public relations, said the commissioner's office will examine an agreement to withhold prosecution that Rhodes signed on Friday in Marion Superior Court. As part of the agreement, Rhodes "admits commission of the offense of domestic battery," a Class A misdemeanor, stemming from a March 18 incident involving live-in girlfriend Latrina Moore at his home. [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] The article goes on to state that the normal penalty for this type of behavior is a one or two game suspension, though there may not be any suspension at all since there was not a conviction. With the questions surrounding Edgerrin James, this is the last thing the Colts needed. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 17. When the Jaguars put on the pads yesterday for the first time since they ended the 2001 season in Chicago Jan. 6, Scott filled in for Smith on Day 2 of Smith's holdout when the Jaguars ran their first play in 11-on-11 drills. [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] Scott is expected to move over to the No. 2 slot when Smith returns as neither Bobby Shaw, nor Patrick Johnson has been particularly impressive. One thing that did come out of this article was the reference Tom Coughlin made to wanting to put the long ball back into the offense. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 18. Gonzalez WILL Play This Season Clipped from the article at the Star Unsigned tight end Tony Gonzalez indicated Friday that he may accept the Chiefs' mandatory one-year offer, though continuing disagreements with president/general manager Carl Peterson appeared to stand in the way of a long-term contract. Peterson said for the first time publicly that the Chiefs wouldn't extend a long-term offer to Gonzalez unless the deal includes a clause that prohibits him from pursuing a job in the NBA. "Nobody has to worry about me sitting out this year," Gonzalez said. "That ($3 million) is more money than I've made in a year in my entire career." [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] First of all, is Carl Peterson vying for the most ignorant man in football award or what? There is no, zero, nada, zilch chance of any NBA team signing Gonzalez to a contract so why is this even an issue with the man? Obviously the good news for fantasy fans is that Gonzalez stated that he will sign the tender if a long term deal can't be worked out. The bad news for Chiefs fans is that it looks like Peterson is ensuring this is Gonzo's last season in KC. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 19. Viking's Kicker Hurts Knee Clipped from the article at startribune.com When the Vikings begin practicing at 8:45 a.m. today, two players will be on the physically unable to perform list: defensive lineman Willie Howard and kicker Doug Brien. Brien ended up on the PUP thanks to an inopportune fall in his house. "I was running down the hall after my daughter," said Brien, who signed with the Vikings on April 29. "She was crying and I was afraid she was hurt. I ran down the stairs and took a corner barefoot and fell on the hardwood floor." Brien injured his left knee -- the leg he plants when kicking. Vikings trainer Chuck Barta said an MRI of the joint revealed a chondral defect, which causes the knee to swell. [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] While this is his non-kicking leg, the stress caused when planting makes this a serious issue. Hopefully a little time off will cure it but, as Brien is a fairly popular pick amongst kickers, you may want to get a backup just in case. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 20. Brooks Missing From Saints Camp Clipped from the article at Yahoo! Sports Saints general manager Mickey Loomis addressed the media on Saturday and said the team has not heard from Brooks or his agent. "I don't know why he's not here because no one has talked to him," Loomis said. "I'm a little disappointed he's not here." However, it is probable that Brooks may be holding out for a new contract since he is scheduled to make the league minimum of $400,000 in 2002 after tying a club record with 26 touchdown passes last season. [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] Not a very good sign folks - Jake Delhomme now becomes the No. 1 guy until Brooks gets back to camp - ya think he would have gone missing if Jeff Blake was still in town? Me neither. Brooks does deserve more money than he is scheduled to make, but Loomis seems adamant that he will not negotiate unless Brooks shows up. We'll keep a close watch on this one for you! /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 21. Shockey Still Missing Clipped from the article at the Star-Ledger TE Jeremy Shockey, the 14th overall pick in the draft, has yet to sign a contract and missed his second day of practices yesterday. Fassel said there was "not a lot of conversation going on" between the organization and agent Drew Rosenhaus. During minicamp and passing camp, Shockey has already become an integral part of the offense. Still, Fassel said, "Nobody's going to just walk in here and say, 'Well, okay, I've got everything down.' He needs to practice." [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] It's tough enough for a rookie TE to live up to expectations when he shows up on time. This is further indication to me that many are ranking Shockey entirely too high. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 22. "The foot at this point hasn't been a problem," Testaverde said yesterday. [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] This is obviously good news for Jets fans and for their receivers. Testaverde is being overlooked in many drafts and that may be a big mistake this year. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 23. Cowher said Zereoue performed admirably yesterday, considering his long stretch of inactivity. "Amos is not where he needs to be right now, but he's got a camp to get there," Cowher said. [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] Bettis showed up to camp 15-20 pounds lighter than his playing weight of a year ago. He did this to add quickness and to help prevent injuries that have dogged him over the past two seasons. Zereoue averaged an excellent 5.2 ypc as a backup last year and seems to be most people's choice should Bettis go down again. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 24. New MLB for the Chargers Clipped from the article at SignOnSanDiego.com Schottenheimer opened his first San Diego training camp by demoting starting middle linebacker Orlando Ruff and moving strong-side linebacker Donnie Edwards into that spot. The team worked Deon Humphrey in Edwards' old position, but he doesn't figure to stay there long if rookie Ben Leber continues to impress coaches when the team dons pads for the first time today. The Chargers like Leber's size (6-foot-3, 244 pounds) and fluidity and probably won't hesitate to promote him to the starting unit if he performs as well in pads as he has in shorts. "We were looking to try to get some more speed at that position, and this is something that Donnie has done before," Schottenheimer said of the change in the middle. "We've actually talked about the possibility of having Junior (Seau) go in there. Junior and I talked about it, and he was comfortable doing it, and we may even do a little of it. [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] If they ever figure out who their MLB is going to be, he will be worthy of consideration for your team. Either Edwards or Seau, both of whom possess outstanding speed, could be a dominate force from that position. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 25. Incumbent kicker Jose Cortez also was perfect on his five tries, making him 9-for-9 in two days. "It's a really good competition," Mariucci said. "It's weird because the players seem real interested in it, and so do the fans. I don't know which way it's going to go." [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] It seems pretty clear to us that if Chandler continues to hit his FGs in practice, he will be the one that is kept. Cortez got his chance last year and performed so erratically that the 49ers used a fourth round draft pick on Chandler. Tie goes to the new guy. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 26. [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] Bruce has a tremendous work ethic so this shouldn't be a concern to anyone. He often drags his feet getting to camp and though this is the first time he has been late, he is there. In a related article, QB Kurt Warner stated that he has no pain in his thumb and is ready to get started. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 27. Titans to Focus on Running Game in Camp Clipped from the article at the Tennessean.com Steve McNair said he had a "sit-down" with Fisher to go over the training camp schedule. Fisher told him he wanted to do as much as possible to get running back Eddie George, who struggled with foot and ankle injuries last season, back on track. "I'm fine with that," McNair said. "Jeff said they know my capabilities and they know what we can do throwing the football. But if we're going to get where we need to go as a team, the running game has to be there. It helps us throw the ball if we can run it." [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] It's unusual for the Titans to not be focusing on their passing game at this point which shows just how much confidence they have in it. One thing this article brought out was how good McNair is feeling right now - his shoulder surgery in January removed a bone spur that had hindered his throwing motion. He now has improved range of motion and stated, "I don't hurt anywhere," he said. "When minicamp was over [in June], I was almost nervous because I felt so good. I didn't want to do anything to hurt myself. I wanted to feel like I do right now when camp started." /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 28. Boston Status Still Up in the Air Clipped from the article at Yahoo! Sports David Boston emerged as one of the most spectacular big-play receivers in the NFL last season, only to have his star tarnished by a cocaine-related run-in with the law. As elusive and powerful as he is, Boston can't run away from his pending legal woes or possible punishment by the NFL, but he figures his talent will allow him to eventually put his problems behind him. Officers arrested Boston at his house and took him to a substation for blood tests that detected cocaine and marijuana. Two bags of cocaine were found later in the back seat of the patrol car, police said, but there was no solid evidence linking them to Boston. Boston was charged with driving under the influence, and the case is pending. [[[[[[[[[[[[[ KELLOGG'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] I continue to maintain that Boston is ranked entirely too high by most FFL pundits. With a positive blood test, the league has the ability to suspend Boston. At a minimum he will be monitored more closely. When added to the knee situation, I believe this is a situation that could go bad in a hurry. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 29.
