Tomlinson sprains ankle - Out a few days Clipped from ESPN story: San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson, already slowed in training camp by a blister, sprained his left ankle Friday and was driven off the field on a cart. Tomlinson, who was to be examined by a doctor, was hurt during a team drill in which he was to hit the hole between the right guard and tackle during the morning practice. He said he thinks another player fell on his ankle from the inside. ''I don't think it is too bad; hopefully it will just be a day-to-day thing but we've just got to be careful with it,'' Tomlinson said. ''It's not something that is going to keep me out for a while.'' [[[[[[[[[[ OUR VIEW ]]]]]]]]]] Following up on our earlier breaking updates regarding this. Interesting in that this started as LT gets carted off the field to now it's just a 2 day sprained ankle. I am cerain that the Chargers let ought a huge ...whew... in that they have minimal depth after LT. Terrell Fletcher as the backup? Wow, now that is lacking depth. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 3. Quote of the Day "I got what I wanted" Ray Lewis after getting a 19 miliion dollar bonus and a 50 million dollar deal. Full Story: The Ravens' All-Pro linebacker delivered the finishing blow to five months of negotiations, calling his agent at 12:30 yesterday morning and ordering him to seal the deal. Less than 12 hours later, Lewis was signing a seven-year contract worth about $50 million and includes an NFL-record signing bonus of $19 million. [[[[[[[[[[ OUR VIEW ]]]]]]]]]] This will help the team by about 1 million to 1.5 million of cap space. Once Boulware is signed (the next priority) the team should have enough cap relief to upgrade some positions. Only one problem though....all the good free agents are gone. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 4. The Rams typically grind out the game in the end and Kurt has already banked his stats for the day. Of the people that appear on this list, Jay Fiedler is a surprise with 13 combined TDs in the 4th quarter. Plummer shows that average QBs on bad teams can put up good fantasy numbers as they are forced to throw often. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 5. He was given 46 such opportunities and made the most of it by a wide margin. Curtis Martin also got a lot of these dump off looks, but his week ypc may change the plan for this season. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 6. Butch Davis on Rickey Dudley Clipped from the Plain Dealer article: Browns coach Butch Davis issued a challenge to his tight ends heading into two days of work against the Buffalo Bills at St. John Fisher College. "We need continued improvement from the tight ends," Davis said after yesterday morning's practice in Berea. "We need Rickey Dudley, Mark Campbell, Aaron Shea and those guys - they've got to step up. They've got to start delivering performances and they've got to be a big part of this passing attack." Davis' challenge came one day after he sent up a flare to Dudley, who underwent surgery last season to repair a ligament in his foot. Asked if Dudley can reach his potential, Davis said, "I think it's conceivable that he can, but Rickey Dudley is the guy that has to motivate himself. He's been in the league long enough and he knows how valuable he is and what a great opportunity he has, and he's got to reach out there and seize it." On the other hand, Davis said he's been pleased with some of the things he's seen from Dudley considering he's coming off a serious injury. "[The injury] was real disappointing," Davis said. "We needed Rickey to be a major factor in our offense last year. But the foot seems to be holding up. If there was a blessing to him being hurt, he spent a ton of time in the weight room, which will help as far as run- blocking on the strong side." Dudley, who caught three passes in team drills yesterday, agreed with Davis that he has to push himself, "but at the same, I have to be helped. I can't do it by myself." [[[[[[[[[[ OUR VIEW ]]]]]]]]]] Here is a player who is completely being overlooked in drafts. Now don't get us wrong, there is lots of downside, but he has averaged 14 ypc in his career. He also scored 29 TDs in his first five years with Oakland. This certainly sounds like a tight end that should get drafted at least in the last round. The Browns paid him huge dollars a year ago and the fact he is expected to be the starter this season warrants that alone. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 7. Jenkins conversion to receiver Clipped from the North County Times article: Ronney Jenkins smacked his hands together and buried his head in them moments after the precision pass bounced off them and through the back of the end zone at the Chargers' summer practice facility at UC San Diego. Reactions like these are more reflex than frustration, said Jenkins on Thursday. The Chargers are hoping the third-year pro can make the conversion from running back to wide receiver, and this is all part of his learning curve. The plan is to get Jenkins more involved in the offense. Head coach Marty Schottenheimer referred to Jenkins as an "explosive" player on several occasions and marveled at his kick-returning prowess. "I'm watching him return those kickoffs today, and it's a blur going up through there," Schottenheimer said. "I'm looking to try to get Ronney Jenkins some playing time, because I know if he gets his hands on the ball he is explosive." [[[[[[[[[[ OUR VIEW ]]]]]]]]]] We think this move makes a lot of sense. He isn't likely going to get any playing time at RB and watching him return kicks shows he is awesoem in the open field. It's doubtful that he will have any real fantasy value, but with the injury histories of Crtis Conway and Tim Dwight, one never knows. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 8. Stevens shining in Seattle Clipped from the Seattle Times article: "I'm going to be real cautious on a lot of compliments early," Coach Mike Holmgren said yesterday, "but he looks real smooth to me. It's pretty clear he knows how to move in a secondary and he's a good receiver. He's off to a good start." Pssst! Two days into his first NFL camp, Stevens is looking good. Real good. Tony Gonzalez good. Shannon Sharpe good. Tight-end-of-the- future good. He beat Shawn Springs along the sideline. He outran Isaiah Kacyvenski across the middle. This was Cheney on the first day of August, but it was easy to see Stevens doing this in Oakland on Opening Day and against San Francisco on Monday night. He looks born to this manor. He isn't awed by these surroundings. The game isn't too fast for him. The playbook isn't too thick. The cornerbacks and safeties and linebackers don't intimidate him. Stevens, the 28th pick of April's first round, looks as if every game of his life merely was prologue to these days. He seems at home. "This is definitely where I expected to be," Stevens said. "I feel like the guys play at the same speed I do, so that makes it easier to run routes and get off blocks. I feel comfortable and I get more comfortable every practice, every day." He is a quarterback's dream receiver. Tall as a power forward. Quick as a running back. Sure-handed as a shortstop. Already he is running with the first team. "He's so smart," Dilfer said. "And he has something to prove to all those teams who passed on him. He has a little bit of a chip on his shoulder, and I like guys with chips on their shoulders and a bunker mentality." [[[[[[[[[[ OUR VIEW ]]]]]]]]]] We liked this pick in the offseason and now like it even better. He will be moving up in our projections that will be released late today/early Sunday. He has surpassed Mili and already working with the first team. Tight Ends usually take a year to get going, but Jerramy Stevens may be the exception. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ That is going to do it here folks.
