Pro Bowl DE John Abraham Out 4-6 weeks Clipped from the ESPN article: New York Jets Pro Bowl defensive end John Abraham sprained his left knee during practice Saturday. Abraham will undergo an MRI on his left knee Monday morning, ESPN.com senior writer Len Pasquarelli reports. The procedure was originally scheduled for Sunday. The typical recovery period for injuries similar to Abraham's is four to six weeks. "I don't want to predict how long he'll be out," coach Herman Edwards said of Abraham, who led the Jets with 13 sacks last season. I don't know when he's coming back." Abraham sprained the medial collateral ligament in his knee when another player rolled on him on a goal-line play during a mock scrimmage. If Abraham misses significant time, Bryan Thomas, the team's No. 1 draft pick, likely will step in as the starter. Thomas, who was drafted out of Alabama-Birmingham, has been working behind Abraham at right defensive end. [[[[[[[[[[ OUR VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]] This is very bad news to a team that looked to be a sleeper on defense. John Abraham will obviously get back on the field, but will lose valuable time conditioning. The Rookie will get his shot whether he is ready or not. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 2. Sapp's Talking Angers Strahan Clipped from the NY Daily News article: Tampa Bay Bucs defensive tackle Sapp believes there should be an asterisk next to the sack record Michael Strahan set last season. The Giants defensive end believes Sapp is a "jackass" who "wishes he was me." "And I hope he reads that," Strahan said yesterday, sitting in his car after lunch at the University at Albany. "He'll see me to my face and he'll be nice, but Warren is a jackass. So get out of the first round of the playoffs, then you can talk to me." Strahan was responding to quotes from the Tampa Bay defensive tackle published in last Sunday's Orlando Sentinel. When Sapp was asked about Strahan and his record of 22-1/2sacks, the first word he said was "asterisk" - an obvious reference to the controversial record- breaking sack Strahan got when Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre slid into him with 2:43 left in the Giants' season. "I just don't get it," Strahan said. "I just hope that Warren would realize he needs to worry about getting better because he's talked about going to the Super Bowl for eight or nine years and he has yet to see one. I've seen one. He can talk about getting the sack record. He didn't come close. I've got it. He's talked about all these other things he has yet to do. [[[[[[[[[[ OUR VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]] You gotta love the defensive heavyweights in a good verbal sparring. This week on Fox's Celebrity Boxing.....But I question why Sapp would say whet he said especially after recording a measley 6 sacks last season. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 3. Northcutt Impressing the Browns Clipped from the Democrat and Chronicle article: Looking for a No. 2 receiver so wide receiver Kevin Johnson has more room to operate, Browns coach Butch Davis has been raving all week about Northcutt's play in training camp. The third-year veteran continued to impress his coach in Saturday's scrimmage against the Buffalo Bills. Northcutt burned the Bills secondary -- first beating cornerback Jason Bostic, then running toward the corner away from safety Coy Wire -- to haul in a touchdown bomb from quarterback Kelly Holcomb. "I came here to see guys compete and step up and make plays," Davis said. "Dennis made plays. If guys do that on a regular basis, they'll become a major part of the game plan." [[[[[[[[[[ OUR VIEW ]]]]]]]]]] Kevin Johnson is the only sure thing at receiver for the Browns. We still believe Quincy Morgan is the most likely number two, but Northcutt could get some playing time. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 4. JJ Stokes? - We are warming up to JJ this season since the 49ers did not secure the services of Willie Jackson in the off-season. JJ will surely get single coverage playing opposite of Terrell Owens. He knows the system. And he is going late in most fantasy drafts. And he looks to have no competition for the #2 WR job this season. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 6. Philadelphia DT Hollis Thomas out for the year? Clipped from NJ.com The Eagles' worst fears were realized when it was learned that defensive tackle Hollis Thomas suffered another fracture in his right foot. Reid said he wouldn't know much more until he consults with a foot specialist, but in all likelihood the 300-plus-pound Thomas will be lost for the season. "I want to talk to the specialist," Reid said, acknowledging that it was tough to get a hold of a doctor over the weekend. "I do worry about big guys when they hurt their foot. But I'm not a doctor." Defensive tackle was one of the position the Eagles ignored in both the draft and free agency this offseason. They did sign undrafted rookie free agent Jeremy Slechta from Nebraska, whom they like, but passed on more highly-regaded players. [[[[[[[[[[ OUR VIEW ]]]]]]]]]] Other than DT Sam Adams, who is close to signing with the Ravens, there are not a lot of options in the free agent market. This is a big loss for a very good defensive unit. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 7. Jim Miller, the clear-cut starter in Chicago? Clipped from the article at Chicago Sports: "I think the fans understand that I work hard," Miller said at training camp Friday. "I'd like to think I'm a no-nonsense guy who packs a flashlight and a lunch pail and goes to work. He's not a leap of faith anymore, but he remains the subject of a skepticism normally reserved for weeping religious statues. The Bears were 13-3 last season and might have done better in the playoffs if Philadelphia's Hugh Douglas hadn't given Miller's shoulder a bad case of separation anxiety. Miller left holding his right arm, and the Bears' season soon followed. But now the talk is of Chris Chandler, the latest version of new and improved. Before Chandler it was Shane Matthews, and before that it was Cade McNown. How many times does Miller have to prove himself before the naysayers say yea? "A lot of times you get labeled," he said. "It's funny. When I left Pittsburgh I was labeled a sack waiting to happen. Last year I was the least-sacked quarterback in the league. Hopefully I've shed that label. Bears coach Dick Jauron says Miller is the Bears' quarterback this year, but no one seems to believe it. They can't see Miller leading this team. [[[[[[[[[[ OUR VIEW ]]]]]]]]]] We are one of those that does not believe it. Miller is adequate, but Chris Chandler throws a better deep ball. We see Chris getting some time behind center this year as well. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ 8. Kitna in tough competition with Gus Frerotte Clipped from the Cincinnati Enquirer: The first round went to Jon Kitna, though not by much. Kitna threw the only touchdown pass during the Cincinnati Bengals' intrasquad scrimmage Saturday, keeping himself ahead in the two-man competition for the starting job. Newcomer Gus Frerotte also looked sharp in his first turn during the Bengals' annual audition for a passer. "I think it's been pretty doggone close," coach Dick LeBeau said. "I've been pleased with both of them, and I think they both moved the team well. I think both guys acquitted themselves well." [[[[[[[[[[ OUR VIEW ]]]]]]]]]] We believe Kitna will start the season as the #1 QB and will likly hold onto that job unless he is injured. /**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/ That's going to do it for today so I can finish the projections.
