How many TD's will Keyshawn catch this year? We can tell you that
the number will not be 1. There are a few factors that will
influence the production of Keyshawn Johnson this year. He has a
new coach that did wonders for some mediocre players in Oakland. He
has a perennial all pro receiver on the opposite side of the field
to take some of the heat off. So how many TD's will this translate
into? To find out go to www.ffcpi.com.

1. Darrell Jackson Update

Clipped from an article by Jos Miguel Romero of the Seattle Times

WR Darrell Jackson returned to practice yesterday after missing the
previous three days with a sore quadriceps.

[[[[[[[[[[[[[ LUEBKE'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]

The quadriceps injury to Jackson should not worry anyone. Jackson
will be healthy when the season starts and ready to go. The
quarterback situation in Seattle is bothering me a little bit.
Jackson slid down slightly with the injury to Dilfer. If Hasselbeck
is unable to move the offense and show some consistency, Jackson
will slide down a little more.

2. Hasselbeck says he's getting closer to finding comfort zone

Clipped from an article by Clare Farnsworth of the Seattle Post-
Intelligencer

A lot has changed this week for Hasselbeck, who is starting to make
plays on the practice field as he prepares for his second start of
the preseason when the Seahawks play host to the Kansas City Chiefs
at their new stadium on Saturday night.

Hasselbeck has to be better against the Chiefs than he was against
the Chargers. For his own sake. For the team's sake. To keep the boo-
birds at bay. To begin building some confidence that he can get the
job done until Dilfer returns.

"I definitely feel more comfortable, just because I've been getting
a lot of snaps," Hasselbeck said. "When you're not the starting
quarterback, you spend most of your time in practice standing around
watching and trying to get mental reps.

[[[[[[[[[[[[[ LUEBKE'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]

While Hasselbeck is nothing more than a 3rd fantasy quarterback at
the current time, he does have potential and a decent situation to
post adequate fantasy numbers and possibly become an emergency "spot
starter" that could post quality numbers on a given week. With that
said, I will be steering clear of the Seahawks' quarterbacks.

3. Chargers Notes: Conway and Tomlinson updates

Clipped from an article by David Neville of chargers.com

With the first roster cut down set for this weekend, the game will
be pivotal for several Chargers, including starters and players
vying for back-up roles. The starting offensive unit, minus running
back LaDainian Tomlinson who will sit out the game with a mild ankle
sprain, is expected to play the first half, while the first defense
will work into the second quarter for the first time in three
preseason contests.

The Chargers had their final practice of training camp at UCSD
Wednesday morning before departing for St. Louis. After the
practice, Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer said that wide receiver
Curtis Conway (hamstring) was doubtful for Thursday's game and that
running back Terrell Fletcher (shoulder) was questionable.

[[[[[[[[[[[[[ LUEBKE'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]

There is no need to drop Tomlinson down your rankings because of
this ankle injury. Schottenheimer is merely protecting his
franchise back. With a few weeks to go before the start of the
season, Tomlinson will have enough time to start the season at
100%. As many of you know, I am a firm believer in downgrading
receivers that have hamstring injuries. You may want to be cautious
with Conway and bump him down a few slots on your draft board and
grab a similarly rated receiver who is currently healthy.

/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/

4. Griese to have full arsenal against Arizona

Clipped from an article by Lynn Debruin, Rocky Mountain News

Wide receivers Rod Smith and Ed McCaffrey were back on the practice
field Wednesday, and both will play against Arizona. That means
Brian Griese, with Shannon Sharpe also ready, will have plenty of
targets as he tries to get Denver's offense on track . . . Jason
Elam was on Denver's "out-of-pads" list Wednesday because of a
strained hamstring.

[[[[[[[[[[[[[ LUEBKE'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]

With Smith, McCaffrey and Sharpe on the field at the same time, this
will be a great chance to see how effective Griese and the Broncos
passing game might be this season. The big news in this game is the
return to the lineup of Ed McCaffrey. Because of injury concerns,
McCaffrey's draft value has been decreased. If McCaffrey is able to
have a quality performance against Arizona, his value will rise
quickly.

/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/

5. Ravens still looking at Antonio Freeman

Clipped from an article by Brent Jones and Paul McMullen of the
Baltimore Sun
Contrary to an ESPN report, the Ravens have not eliminated the
possibility of adding free-agent receiver Antonio Freeman.

[[[[[[[[[[[[[ LUEBKE'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]

The Ravens passing game needs all the help it can get. Freeman
would be a welcome addition to the roster. Keep in mind, Freeman
has lost a step and could be considered a #3 fantasy receiver at
best given the Ravens quarterback situation.

6. Redskins trade Rosenfels to Dolphins

Clipped from an article by Len Pasquarelli of espn.com

The Washington Redskins on Thursday alleviated their logjam at
quarterback, trading their second-year player Sage Rosenfels to the
Miami Dolphins, ESPN.com has learned.

Rosenfels, 24, has completed 32 of 54 passes this preseason, for 476
yards. He has five touchdown passes, two interceptions and a 103.6
passer rating. The former Iowa State standout did not play in a
single game as a rookie.

Although he has performed well in camp and the preseason, Rosenfels
was behind veterans Danny Wuerffel and Shane Matthews on the depth
chart. The Redskins also have first-round choice Patrick Ramsey on
the roster, and opted not to go into the regular season with all
four quarterbacks.

[[[[[[[[[[[[[ LUEBKE'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]

This is good news for both Danny Wuerffel and Shane Matthews.
Rosenfels seemed to have a better control of the offense and
appeared to be outperforming both of the former Florida
quarterbacks. With Jay Fiedler struggling in Miami throughout the
preseason, it appears the Dolphins are starting to lose some
confidence in him. If given the chance, Rosenfels could be
relatively productive. However, he has no draft value at the
current time.

/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/

7. Boston late for practicefined

Clipped from an article by Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic
Receiver David Boston missed practice Tuesday, and McGinnis fined
him "the maximum" amount. That's believed to be in the $3,500
range. Boston arrived with about 20 minutes left in the workout.

[[[[[[[[[[[[[ LUEBKE'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]

Nothing major here. Keep Boston where he is on your draft board.

8. Steelers Notes: Burress returns, Stewart update

Clipped from an article by Jerry Dipaola of Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Steelers quarterback Kordell Stewart missed practice Wednesday
afternoon while trying to shake the lingering effects of his
concussion, and he may not play Saturday against the Detroit Lions
in the third preseason game.

Wide receiver Hines Ward, cornerback Deshea Townsend (shoulder
injuries) and wide receiver Plaxico Burress (knee) returned to
practice on Wednesday.

[[[[[[[[[[[[[ LUEBKE'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]

This is a good sign for Burress, who hyper extended his left knee on
Tuesday. The lingering effects of Stewart's concussion continue to
bother me. I have yet to downgrade him, but the continues to put
doubts in my mind (and Stewart's mind I'm sure) about drafting him.
We'll know more as we head closer to the start of the season.

/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/

9. Marvin Minnis not ready

Clipped from an article from the Kansas City Star

Minnis, who broke a bone in his foot during off-season practice, is
no closer to returning now than a few weeks ago, according to
Vermeil.

"I'm not optimistic," Vermeil said. "It's going to be a while. It's
risky. The trouble with that is you can think it's ready to go when
it's not ready to go and then you hurt it worse. Then, you're not
ready to go forever, or for the rest of the year. Right now, he's
not ready to play."

[[[[[[[[[[[[[ LUEBKE'S VIEW ]]]]]]]]]]]]]

Being a young receiver, missing the practice time in the preseason
will have an impact on Minnis' stats for the upcoming season.
Kansas City (and Trent Green) was expecting big things this season
from Minnis. Vermeil is taking a cautious approach with Minnis and
his foot.

Game Summary Contributors:

If you'd like to possibly be a contributor to this Game Notes
feature, here's what you need to do. Find a game you can watch this
weekend and create a report based on the following questions for
each team:

1. Players that looked great and why.
2. Players that looked bad and why.
3. Plays that "should have" happened but were called back from
penalty or bad play. (ie - Peyton Manning had a 50 yard sure TD that
Harrison dropped. Or Edgerrin James had a 10 yard rush TD that was
called back for holding)
4. Who's getting the Red Zone looks / touches?
5. Any trends developing (ie - QB locking onto one WR, or RB being
used as a receiver more)

It's a summary, so be concise with your words. Also try to keep
opinion at a minimum and just let me know what it was you saw.

Put together a report and email to me at Bryant@f...
and I'll evaluate and let you know if we should discuss further.

If you're looking for an example, here's two from last week

New England vs Philadelphia

New England

*** Belichick let Brady and the rest of the offensive starters play
the whole first half.

*** WR -- Deion Branch looked good again, although he did fumble on
a hit by Levon Kirkland. He was the target of the first two plays of
the game, including an end around for 18 yards. Returned punts and
kicks well, which was one of the main reasons he was drafted in the
late 2nd. Had 3 receptions for 34 yards on 5 targets.

*** WR -- David Patten started opposite Branch. Had 4 receptions for
32 yards on 7 targets (one picked). The INT was simply a great play
by Dawkins, who came in on the ball in zone coverage.

*** WR -- Troy Brown did not start, but he is fine. He came in to
play at the end of the first half and had two catches for 32 yards
as Brady led a solid two minute drive,
culminating in a pick in the end zone.

*** WR -- Hayes did not start, but got a lot of looks in the second
half. Brady's second INT in the first half was intended for him in
the back corner of the end zone; the ball was under thrown. He ended
up with 4 receptions for 27 yards on 6 targets.

*** RB -- Antowain Smith ran well (9 rushes for 34 yards) but was
not involved in the passing game. Expect Belichick to continue to
bring in Marc Edwards, Kevin Faulk, and Redmond throughout the year.

*** DEF -- The Patriots D was able to get a lot of pressure on
McNabb and was able to sack him once.

Philadelphia:

*** The Eagles starters were still a little sloppy, getting
penalized 8 times in the first half.

*** QB -- *** McNabb played well but threw only three passes to his
starting wide receivers - a 12 yarder to Pinkston, a 6 yarder to
Thrash, and an incomplete pass to Mitchell.

*** RB -- Duce had three receptions on six targets, bobbling three
decently thrown passes.

*** RB -- Dorsey only had three carries and no receptions on two
targets.

*** DEF -- The Eagles defense, particularly the secondary, looked
great as expected. Dawkins and 1st round CB Lito Sheppard both
intercepted Brady in the fist half. They blitzed a lot, but were
unable to get a sack even against an injury depleted Pats O line.

/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/

Carolina vs Dallas:

Carolina

*** QB -- Chris Weinke had a strong performance using a ball control
offensive scheme. He made good reads and got the ball off quickly to
the open receivers. A defensive pass interference penalty cost
Weinke about 40 yards on a bomb to Muhammad.

*** RB -- Lamar Smith started the game and made excellent reads and
busted through the holes created by the offensive line for two solid
gains but was pulled on 3rd and Long situations for DeShaun Foster.
He lacked the ability to break tackles and beat the defense to the
outside on tosses and sweeps.

*** RB -- DeShaun Foster ran very well by breaking tackles and
picking his holes to run through. One run he was tripped up for a 4
yard gain when he could have had a 12+ yard run if he regained
balance. He lined up as a WR and caught a quick hitch for a 3 yard
gain and also motioned out of this formation to back behind Weinke
for several trap plays for nice gains. Foster showed better speed
through the holes and bouncing outside than Smith. On a 3rd and 1 he
was pulled for Lamar Smith which could also mean in the red zone he
would also be pulled.

*** WR -- Muhsin Muhammad had a very light game but the Panthers
were setting him up with their play calling. In the first series,
they ran a few dive plays and a hitch to Steve Smith then play-
actioned to Muhammad going deep which ended up in defensive pass
interference. On the second series, they ran a few trap plays and a
quick dump to Brad Hoover then play-actioned to Muhammad for a 5
yard gain.

*** WR -- Steve Smith started opposite of Muhammad and looked like a
solid number two WR by getting good separation from the defensive
backs and not dropping passes thrown in his direction. They threw
several quick passes to him for small gains and threw 2 deep passes
to him with one being a 31 yard TD.

*** TE -- Wesley Walls was hardly even glanced at and seemed to be
merely occupying a defender or two. He also was losing dump off
passes to the FB Brad Hoover and looked to be playing a lesser role
in the offense.

Dallas:

*** The offensive line that started contained several 2nd and 3rd
stringers which could not keep up with the Panthers defensive line
and allowed Carolina to stuff the run and place a lot of pressure on
the QBs during pass plays.

*** QB -- Quincy Carter made solid quick decisions and got the ball
off cleanly to the WRs when given time to set up. He had a few
passes that were dropped but the lack of production of the offense
he lead was from the inability of the RBs to get gains as they were
constantly getting stuffed.

*** QB -- Chad Hutchinson threw solid passes that hit the WRs in the
numbers except when going deep in which he overthrew several WRs and
under threw a TE. He also threw a couple passes to WRs running
different routes, was moving outside toward the defensive linemen
instead of stepping up into the pocket, and he ran out of bounds for
a long sack. At this moment, Hutchinson appears to be no where near
starting this season over Quincy Carter because of these rookie
mistakes.

*** WR -- Joey Galloway made a few good catches and found the soft
spots in the defense but did not overly impress.

*** WR -- Antonio Bryant started in the place of injured WR Raghib
Ismail and played quite well. He made several catches with defenders
on top of him and also broke away from defenders on short crossing
routes for 1st downs. He had one dropped pass but also got a
defensive pass interference on a slant. Could turn out to have a
decent season if Ismail or Galloway goes down during this season.

*** Dallas played a lot of two TE formations but rarely threw the
ball in their direction. During their only red zone appearance TE
James Whalen caught a pass to get them to the 11 yard line and was
under thrown on a deep pass pattern later in the game.

*** PK -- Tim Seder is getting solid competition from Billy Cundiff
and could possibly lose his job as Cundiff made a 52 and a 32 yard
FG but Seder kicked equally well making a 49 and a 25 yard FG.

*** DEF -- Dallas' defense missed a lot of tackles and allowed big
holes that allowed way to many running yards but played solid in the
secondary allowing only a 31 yard TD and long pass interference
which allowed a FG opportunity.
