Quarterbacks
Starter - Shane Matthews
Backups - Danny Wuerffel, Patrick Ramsey

Starting Quarterback: The million dollar question right now is which former Gator will lead Washington this season. For game 1 at least the answer is Shane Matthews. We have him attempting about two-thirds of the Washington passes this season. Looking at Steve Spurrier's history at Florida, it's not unreasonable to expect rotating QBs at Washington. In the past, Spurrier has shown a propensity to become annoyed with a struggling QB. Even the best NFL signal-callers struggle at times. Will Spurrier have a quick trigger with regards to bringing in the backup? We shall see.

Backup Quarterback(s): If Matthews is the at-the-moment-starter, then Danny Wuerffel is the at-the-moment-backup. Danny appeared to have the inside track for the starting job, but played poorly in the last pre-season game. The rookie Patrick Ramsey signed late and may not see much playing time at all this season. Sage Rosenfels was traded to Miami.

Running Backs
Starter - Stephen Davis
Backups - Kenny Watson, Ladell Betts

Starting Running Back: Stephen Davis should roll for 1600 or so total yards and could approach double digit TD numbers. He is the unquestioned starter and will not be challenged for playing time. The downside is that his role is not completely defined with the arrival of Spurrier. Davis has received little action in the preseason, but we see that as Spurrier knowing what he has with Davis. One does have a bit of concern that the rushing attempts will be down a bit this season.

Backup Running Back(s): At the moment, Kenny Watson is the primary backup, but there is good odds on Ladell Betts taking over that job. Either way, no RB will see many touches with a healthy Stephen Davis around.

Fullback(s) - Bryan Johnson, Rock Cartwright: Aside from AC/DC vocals and a role on Bonanza, there's not much to see here. Any action to the RB position will be garnered by Davis. The FB will be left with scraps.

Wide Receivers / Tight Ends
Starters - Rod Gardner, Derrius Thompson
Backups - Jacquez Green, Kevin Lockett, Darnerian McCants

Starting Receiver(s): Rod Gardner is the most talented WR in our capital while Jacquez Green has flourished in this offense before. They make a good starting duo for the Redskins. Gardner should finish the year as a top 20 WR. Green's numbers will be hampered by the offense in that many WRs will be involved in the action. Unless this offense just absolutely explodes, there won't be enough balls to have two quality fantasy WRs.

Derrius Thompson, after an oustanding camp, has vaulted into the other starting job. He will not be picked in many leagues and could be a nice sleeper to keep an eye on.

Backup Receiver(s): There are plenty. Expect Washington to trot out Lockett and McCants each week. Each could be capable of 75 yards and a score at any time. The problem is that production will be nearly impossible to predict.

Tight End(s) - Zeron Flemister, Walter Rasby, Robert Royal: There are two problems with expecting greatness from Zeron Flemister: 1) he's not very good, and 2) there are too many WRs around that are better than he is. If you're looking for a viable TE, look at another team.

Place Kicker
Brett Conway: Conway is one of those backup PKs that you just love to have. If his offense falters, no big deal because he's just your backup. However, if Spurrier's offense takes flight, Conway could join the upper tier PKs this season. Don't jump out there and grab him early, but he could be a late-round gem.

Defense

Our experts are all over the map with regards to the Redskins defense. Rankings range from 1st to 25th. There's no doubt that there is great talent in place here. There's also little doubt that the coaching staff (specifically defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis) can coach great defense. The only question mark here is the Washington offense. If that side of the ball is successful, this defense should thrive. If the offense struggles, this defense could wilt under the pressure to carry the team.

On the IDP side of things, S Sam Shade, LB Jeremiah Trotter, and LB LaVar Arrington should be among the top 30 at their respective positions.
Coaching

New Head Coach Steve Spurrier has won at every level. His offense has been successful at every level. Of course, there is no level to compare with the NFL. He strives for perfection and has a big-league attitude. There's every reason to believe he'll eventually be successful in the NFL. Just give him time. Defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis is an unmitigated success in the world of NFL defenses. He is the man on defense.
Intangibles

Every season brings new hope in the nation's capital. Of course by week 8 that hope has usually been dashed. Will Spurrier find success quickly or will lack of offensive talent be too much to overcome? One big downside is the lack of stability in Washington. Sometimes change is good. However, it must be disconcerting to change offenses and defenses three times in three years.
