Ultimate Recap

Essential News

QB Josh McCown (Ari) is expected to remain the team's starting QB for the remainder of the season.

QB Michael Vick (Atl) says he almost did not play last week because his right leg was so sore. He says he will be ready to play this weekend against the Buccaneers and believes there will be no swelling in the leg and only a trace of soreness.

QB Chris Chandler (Chi) practiced on Wednesday and Thursday but will still be the #3 QB this weekend.

QB Tim Couch (Cle) will reportedly restructure his contract and return to the Browns as the starting QB in 2004. In related news, Kelly Holcomb is likely to return as Couch's backup.

QB Mike McMahon (Det) could see action before the season ends. "We'd like to see him play," HC Steve Mariucci said. "He deserves to play. He's a good quarterback. It's not because we're disappointed with Joey at all. It's because it would be good to see a backup quarterback get some snaps."

QB Brett Favre (GB) says he will return for the 2004 season. He practiced on Friday and will start this weekend as usual. In related news, Favre says his thumb has not improved much since being injured earlier in the season, and he expects to have surgery this off-season.

QB David Carr (Hou) practiced this week and is expected to start this weekend.

QB Jay Fiedler (Mia) practiced on Wednesday and Thursday and should play this weekend.

QB Kerry Collins (NYG) went home ill on Thursday. He is also still hobbled by the high ankle sprain. HC Jim Fassel has admitted that he doesn't see Collins coming back this season.

QB Jesse Palmer (NYG) is expected to remain the team's starting QB for the remainder of the season.

QB Vinny Testaverde (NYJ) says he wants to return in 2004 as the Jets #2 QB, but he will retire rather than stick around as the #3.

QB Drew Brees (SD) will remain as the team's starting QB after passing for a career high 353 yards in week 15.

QB Jeff Garcia (SF) is "definitely" wanted as the team's starting QB in 2004 according to HC Dennis Erickson. Of course Garcia's $9 million price tag will likely need to be renegotiated.

QB Steve McNair (Ten) did not practice all week and will be a game-time decision. If he cannot go, newly signed Neil O'Donnell will start. OPINION - We think neither of these players (McNair or O'Donnell) should be played. Because the Titans are playing Houston, they may feel they can win with O'Donnell and simply give McNair a rest. Additionally even if McNair starts, Tennessee could rest him if they get a lead. O'Donnell might even start with McNair being used in the second half if they need him. Add that to the risk that McNair could worsen his situation on one play makes this a situation to avoid even though it is a great matchup.

QB Billy Volek (Ten) has been lost for the season with a ruptured spleen.

QB Tim Hasselbeck (Was) will remain the team's starting QB for the remainder of the season.

FB George Layne (Atl) has been lost for the season after being placed on the injured reserve list.

FB Alan Ricard (Bal) practiced this week and is expected to play.

RB Willis McGahee (Buf) is "not likely" to play this weekend according to HC Gregg Williams.

RB Stephen Davis (Car) did not practice on Friday. He is officially a game-time decision, but he is expected to sit this weekend. The Panthers can not improve their status for the playoffs so they will use this week and possibly week 17 to heal their dinged up players.

RB Corey Dillon (Cin) did not practice on Wednesday, but he did go on Thursday and Friday and should play this weekend.

RB William Green (Cle) reportedly chose rehab rather than being suspended for the entire 2004 season. He will not play again this season.

RB Jamel White (Cle) is still starting in place of William Green, but Lee Suggs is expected to get a good look as well.

RB Clinton Portis (Den) went through warm-ups on Friday but did not practice with the team. "He did pat-and-gos," head coach Mike Shanahan said, referring to the tosses the Broncos throw in warm-ups. "He's still a little bit sore. If he makes as (many) strides over the next couple of days (as he has this week), he's got a chance. So we've just got to wait and see." Obviously, Portis is still a game-time decision. Even if he plays, he'll likely not be at 100%. And there is always the huge risk of him tweaking the knee again and ending his night. If he cannot go, look for Mike Anderson to start and Quentin Griffin to back him up. OPINION - We think Portis will play, but get spelled often with Mike Anderson (making both possible bad plays this week).

RB Olandis Gary (Det) did not play last week (he wasn't even active) as the Lions finally got Artose Pinner some game action. As long as Pinner stays healthy, Gary might not see the field the rest of the season.

RB Dominic Rhodes (Ind) practiced on Friday and should play this weekend.

RB Jerome Bettis (Pit) took Wednesday and Thursday off but practiced on Friday. He is expected to start this weekend.

RB LaDainian Tomlinson (SD) has a sore toe but will start this weekend. In related news, HC Marty Schottenheimer says Tomlinson is the greatest RB he has ever seen. In his 27-year pro football career, Schottenheimer has played and worked with the likes of Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, O.J. Simpson, Earl Campbell, Eric Dickerson, and Marcus Allen. That's stellar company.
