Aaron Brooks career statistics

Aaron Brooks' stats last season while his team was trailing by 15 or more points: 690 passing yards, 5 TDs, 8 INTs, 95 rushing yards. That's 67 fantasy points, which was enough to earn Brooks the Garbage Time QB of the Year Award for 2001. And if your league doesn't penalize for interceptions, he would have won it by a much wider margin. Here's the top ten:

Is this something to be concerned about?

Conventional wisdom says that stats earned after the game has already been decided should be discounted a bit. And there may be something to that, but in this case it should come with a couple of warnings.

First, "down by 15 or more points" isn't exactly the same thing as "garbage time." It's a decent approximation, but it's not perfect. In Brooks' case in particular, some of those numbers were in a game against the Rams that the Saints actually ended up winning.

Also, what the above list doesn't show is how many minutes worth of garbage time the Saints played last year. If his team was in garbage time more than most teams, it makes sense that more of his numbers would have been accumulated in garbage time.

I'll let you decide for yourself if you want to downgrade Brooks a smidge because of this. If it helps you any, I'll tell you that the top 5 garbage time QBs of 2000 were (in order): Collins, Garcia, Plummer, Favre, and Testaverde.

I'll close with the top 10 garbage time RBs and WRs of 2001:
