Drinen rambles about something having to do with:
Curtis Conway
Introduction to these player comments
Last year, Curtis Conway had 116 rushing yards and one rushing TD, making 18 rushing fantasy points. Not bad for a 30-year-old. Best rushing seasons (since 1970) by WRs aged 29+Rush Name Year FPT -------------------------------- Jerry Rice 1994 21 Dwight Stone 1993 18 Anthony Carter 1991 18 Curtis Conway 2001 18 Raghib Ismail 1999 17 Rod Smith 2000 16 Leslie Shepherd 1998 15 Jerry Rice 1996 14 Leonard Thompson 1981 14 Freddie Solomon 1984 13 Leonard Thompson 1983 13 Lance Rentzel 1972 13 Jerry Rice 1993 13 Anthony Carter 1992 13 Jerry Rice 1992 12 Paul Warfield 1971 12 Mel Gray 1978 11 Ricky Sanders 1991 11 The way I see it, this is just one more minor mark against Conway, who I think has to be the player least likely to match his 2001 numbers in 2002. Curtis has always been a pretty good rusher for a WR, but does anyone expect him to get 116 rushing yards (on the strength of 16.6 yards per rush) and a TD next year? In his previous eight seasons, he averaged 36 rushing yards and no TDs. Assuming he goes back to that level, he's lost 14 fantasy points before we even start talking about whether he can repeat his near-career-best receiving numbers. But Conway doesn't have to repeat his 2001 numbers to represent good value. He was #12 last year among WRs and as of this writing (mid-July), the consensus has him ranked around #30 for this year. He'll probably be a bit lower than that on my board, but not much.
