Drinen rambles about something having to do with:
Stephen Davis
Introduction to these player comments
Last year, Stephen Davis increased his rushing yards by more than a thousand. But his rushing TDs dropped by more than half, from 11 to five. A TD dip like that isn't very common. Since 1970, there have been 16 backs (besides Davis) who have increased their rushing yardage while seeing their rushing TDs drop by five or more. Here they are:
+------------+------------+------------+ | Before | | After | | | | | Name | Yards TDs | Yards TDs | Yards TDs | --------------------+------------+------------+------------+ Stephen Davis | 1318 11 | 1432 5 | ? ? | Corey Dillon | 1129 10 | 1130 4 | 1200 5 | Lydell Mitchell | 1193 11 | 1200 5 | 1159 3 | Curtis Martin | 1152 14 | 1160 4 | 1287 8 | Kevin Mack | 665 10 | 735 5 | 485 3 | Wendell Tyler | 564 9 | 856 4 | 1262 7 | Herschel Walker | 737 12 | 891 7 | 1514 5 | Jon Keyworth | 374 10 | 725 3 | 349 3 | Vince Workman | 237 7 | 631 2 | 284 2 | Brad Baxter | 666 11 | 698 6 | 559 7 | Emerson Boozer | 549 11 | 831 3 | 563 4 | Tony Dorsett | 1007 12 | 1325 7 | 1107 6 | Tony Dorsett | 1185 11 | 1646 4 | 745 5 | Joe Morris | 1336 21 | 1516 14 | 658 3 | John Brockington | 1027 8 | 1144 3 | 883 5 | Earnest Byner | 432 8 | 576 3 | 580 7 | Karim Abdul-Jabbar | 892 15 | 960 6 | 445 1 | --------------------+------------+------------+------------+ [Note: I only included backs who were above the baseline in the first year.] In the following year, all but two of the sixteen had a TD total that was closer to the bad year than the good one. My money says Davis will be number three.
