Warrick Dunn career statistics

People tend to think of Warrick -- well, I tend to think of Warrick -- as a guy who's generally a good third running back, but who had one studly year. In reality, he's been a #2 RB every year of his career:

Warrick Dunn's rank among RBs
-----------------------------
  1997    13th
  1998    19th
  1999    21st
  2000    15th
  2001    23rd

As of this writing (late May), Dunn's role is unclear in a Falcon backfield that is crowded with both talent and question marks. I tend not to worry about these kinds of things. My thoughts run something like this:

  1. Football coaches know what they're doing, and will find a way to utilize good football players;
  2. Warrick Dunn is a good football player.
  3. Therefore, Dunn is going to be utilized and will produce.

There are some pretty big leaps of faith in that line of reasoning, the most notable being the assumption that Dan Reeves knows what he's doing. But the point is, when a situation is as murky as this one presently is, any guesses I make are as likely to be wrong as right. I prefer to work from what I know (Dunn can play football) rather than what I don't really have a clue about (what plans Reeves has for Duckett et al).

As the preseason unfolds, this mess will probably get a lot clearer. Until then, I think the best policy is to project Dunn to do the same thing he's always done: be a decent second running back for your fantasy squad.
