Drinen rambles about something having to do with:
Ahman Green
Introduction to these player comments
In case you didn't know it yet, Ahman Green is the real deal. Last year, he finished among the top 5 RBs for the second time. And he was only 24. Of all RBs whose careers started in 1970 or later, here are the ones who were able to put together two (or more) top 5 seasons before age 25.
Name VBD after age 24 ------------------------------------ Emmitt Smith 780 Barry Sanders 669 Walter Payton 796 Thurman Thomas 577 Marcus Allen 429 Edgerrin James ? Ahman Green ? Eric Dickerson 515 Curtis Martin 356 Earl Campbell 289 Tony Dorsett 521 Ottis Anderson 300 Smith, Sanders, and Payton each had three top 5 seasons before age 25, so they're in a slightly higher class than Green. But the others (minus James) averaged 427 VBD points during the remainder of their careers (and Curtis Martin will likely add to that). Among the seven of them, they went on to have 10 more top 5 seasons and 27 more top 10 seasons. So we have, roughly,
Over/Unders for the remainder of Ahman Green's career: Total VBD: 430 Number of top 5 seasons: 1.5 Number of top 10 seasons: 4 Which side of those bets would you take? I'd probably take the unders, but I think they're all reasonable.
