Drinen rambles about something having to do with:
Trent Green
Introduction to these player comments
Every July, I calmly and rationally remind myself not to pay any attention at all to preseason stats. Pay attention to injuries, sure. Pay attention to the fights for starting positions, you bet. But for the regular players who have a job locked up, forget about it. Their stats -- good or bad -- don't mean a thing. Then every August, I find myself getting all hot and bothered by someone's preseason and throwing this rule out the window. As you may have guessed, Trent Green was the guy last year. I liked Green a little going into the preseason. He spent his August carving up defenses like nobody's business. He looked sharp. I told myself that I could make an exception in his case. He was in an entirely new situation, after all, so his preseason was relevant. You know how this one turned out. Remember Randy Moss' preseason last year? 9 catches for 296 yards and 5 scores in about 7 quarters of football. So of course he goes on to have the worst regular season of his career. If you've figured out how to interpret preseason stats, more power to you. But I haven't, and I doubt there's any chance I will figure it out any time soon. This year I'm sticking to my guns, and completely ignoring all preseason stats. Don't worry, though. Next year, I'll be sure to let you know which guy it was that burned me because I ignored my rule.
